Just about 30 inches but we believe that we have discovered what it is. Appears to be a antique loom shuttle fabric hanger. Thanks

Close, but not quite. It is part of a loom, called a heddle. A single warp string is passed through the space between each of the wires or strings. It's the heddle that keeps the warp strings in line. Each heddle in turn is attached to a shaft, operated by foot pedals (on a floor loom). Using the pedals to raise or lower one heddle holding alternate warp strings is what creates a vertical space between the warps through which the shuttle carrying the weft string is passed horizontally in one direction. Using the pedals to reverse the division of vertical space, the shuttle is passed back through in the opposite direction. The back and forth, up and down passage of the weft through the warp is what, in time, creates a weaving.

What this heddle is doing in whatever that is that is pictured holding it (it doesn't appear to be a loom...) I cannot even begin to guess, but it is a heddle and it appears to be a good old one, which is why I suggest it might well be a string heddle instead of a wire heddle.

Dear cgard2. Thank you for setting us straight. I will let my DIL know. She had just brought it home and she had it hung on the thermostat so she could get a picture. I promise she will find a more appropriate setting for it.
