Almost year to date....

I had posted last year about downsizing from a queen mattress to a twin. My back has been sore so this weekend I decided to turn my mattress to see if it would help. My mattress is non flippable. When I pulled off the heated mattress cover pad thing I noticed a bunch of what looks like water rings. ALL over, probably less than an inch big. I saw a couple larger ones which were probably from wet hair or maybe from when I've used an ice pack these other ones I couldn't figure out. My mattress is probably 9 yrs old or so...so I think I might be ready for a new mattress.

When I was thinking of a twin size, I was thinking of like a cool daybed look...but not sure if I want to drop down to a twin size. I think realistically a full size would be best. I have an iron/metal bed in full that I got for my DD but she doesn't use it and I love it so I'm going to use it.

NOW for the hard part, mattress shopping. UGH!!

The best mattress set I've ever had is from The Original Mattress Factory, which is a Virginia company with stores on the east coast (PA to FL), OH and MN.

I just received my dad's copy of Consumer Reports Buying Guide 2018. "What to Skip" - the cooling layer, that doesn't guarantee a cooler sleep.

They list 51 innerspring, 46 foam and 4 adjustable air. If you let me know what you're interested in, I can scan/post or list names.f

DD2 bought a Casper mattress. I've slept on it when they go out of town, and I dog and/or babysit. It is comfortable.

Names of brand mattresses vary by store, so it's hard to compare apples to apples.

I agree with Delilah - OMF has quality products. On a side note, they are based in Cleveland, OH. Proud Ohioan here! ;)

I did not know that 2pups4me! I believe they do not sell to other stores and last I checked do not sell on line.

In 2013, my husband and I went mattress shopping. We had a mattress from Original Mattress Factory and it was non-flippable. We rotated it regularly, but we had back pain.

We looked and tried so many mattresses and the price for a king size is well, a lot of money considering it should be replaced every 8 years.

So...we went to Sleep Number. Ouch, we thought (seeing the price)! We went home, mulled it over and ran the numbers. If we had to replace a mattress every 8 years, then suddenly the Sleep Number, which are air mattresses and don't need to be replaced (but, you can replace individual parts), didn't look so expensive.

We purchased the split-king with motion. No more disturbing each other. We could elevate our heads, use Zero gravity for when we were really in pain (after a day of working in the garden), etc.

Four months later, my DH was diagnosed with brain cancer, but since we had the motion bed, we didn't need a hospital bed for him.

Now that I'm widowed, my poodle takes the other twin side at night, and I have mine.

No regrets on swallowing that big pill four years ago.

I’ve been shopping for a new mattress too. Mine is about 10 years old and definitely needs replaced. Decided we were not spending big bucks on one this time. Seems like no matter how much is spent none really last much more than a few years. Friend purchased one online and I’ve waited for them to use it close to a year before looking into it myself. They still love it and during cyber week at amazon I️ purchased this for $204, free shipping, king size 12”. It arrived in 2 days and I️ set it up easily myself. Don’t see where I️ can go wrong for the money. Almost 12,000 reviews with 75% 4-5 stars.

Love our Sleep Number bed, which we have had for at least 20 years, back when it was called Select Comfort. It is a very basic model, and we needed to replace one of the air chambers several years ago. It is the original motor, and without a doubt, it saved my husband's bad back. It is a queen model. It is difficult to sleep on a conventional mattress, after getting used to the one at home. Obviously, though, it cannot be flipped or rotated. And, it is best used under a conventional bed with space for the air tubes and motor. We have a platform bed, and the motor and tubes cannot be tucked under the bed.

Ours is Select Comfort (Sleep Number), too, and at least 20 years old. So far we’ve never replaced any parts except the battery in the remote.

One side leaks pretty steadily now, so we are starting to think about replacing it, and will likely go with Sleep Number again.

Until reading this thread and doing the math, I didn't realize my mattress is going on 15 years. It's still great. This is the first conventional mattress I've bought in all my years as an adult as the 3 previous ones were waterbeds; no baffles, baffles, and tubes. I never thought I could transition to a conventional, but after trying everything available in my area, went with the top offering at my local mattress manufacturer. Sadly they no longer offer this model which has a pillowtop with a separate layer of squatty coils. In your research, consider checking out a local small manufacturer if you have one anywhere in your area; the quality may be outstanding.

We have a latex bed. It's about 8 years old now, and feels like new.
