240 Volt Workshop Outlet

I currently have a single 240 volt outlet in my shop that I use for my tablesaw. I recently bought a 240 volt jointer / planer. I would like to modify the outlet to a 250 volt duplex so I can plug both pieces of equipment into the outlet without having to unplug one to plug in the other. The outlet is currently behind my workbench and would be a pain to switch plugs every time I wanted to use a piece of equipment. There will never be a time that I would run both pieces of equipment at the same time.


Is there any problems with changing the current outlet to a duplex outlet?

    I often run the TS and jointer at the same time. Rip, straighten, rip again, etc.

    As long as both are not under load at the same time, one circuit will be fine.

    I was told by my inspector when I built my shop that you can't have more than one outlet on a 240V line. That's because it would make it possible to overload the circuit - regardless of whether it's a 20, 30 or 40 amp circuit. I am no expert on the national code or your local codes, and if you don't run them both at once there shouldn't be a problem, but you can't guarantee no one ever will. So be prepared, when you sell the house some day, to fix that.

    There is no difference in the NEC between 120v and 240v in this section.

    Clearly, you can not run more equipment at one time than the rating of the circuit, but just like your living room receptacles, it is more about intent than the number of receptacles. You could always end up plugging two 12A vacuums into the same circuit. Therefore, if an inspector sees a "shop" for more than one or two people to work in, compared to a garage that doubles as an occasional work space, they may have different interpretations.

    You also need to check the amps @ 240 volts for the equipment. The 240 versions are often only half the current draw of the 120 volt version, meaning they could both add up to less than the circuit rating.

    As long as wire size is 12 guage or larger and breaker is no larger than 20 amp,it will be perfectly safe and I don't know any reason it will not pass inspection.

    "and I don't know any reason it will not pass inspection." - ignorance is no excuse. There are plenty of reasons it may not pass an inspection, the first being that the inspector does not buy your promise of only using one piece of equipment at a time. The reason multiple receptacles are allowed is so that you could put a receptacle every 12' allowing you to use the equipment anywhere in the garage without an extension cord, not so that you can leave multiple pieces of equipment plugged in that could overload the circuit. If it is so difficult to plug in the equipment, the inspector would probably tell you to move the receptacle, as that disconnect is required to be "readily accessible", and the excuse for two outlets would backfire.

    The first part of 210.19 still says;

    It is up to the inspector to decide whether the two outlets are for convenience only, or likely to overload the circuit,.. unless both motors would comply with section 430.

    Thanks for that excellent info. It seems to me that this should be no different from 120V outlets elsewhere in the house, in terms of usage. As you say, I can certainly overload any circuit with two vacuums, hair dryer and a space heater, etc. etc.

    I need more 240V outlets in my own shop, and after reading this, I'm going to seriously consider adding an outlet to an existing circuit instead of running a separate line. I will of course check my machines' amp rating at 240V and make sure I won't be overloading a circuit with multiple machines. The dust collector can have its own circuit so it's separate from whatever other machines I'm using. Another thing you can do in a shop is label the outlets with what circuit they're on, so it's easy for anyone to tell when they're plugging things into the same circuit.

    HeyTox,,I've had good luck with color coded cover plates or paint on wall surrounding switches and outlets. Everthing on circuit has matching color and panel has same color next to breaker. It worked so well I begin painting sections of wall frame top plates different colors in storage areas. When sending a helper for an item,I can say "look on bottom shelf beneath green".

    That's a good idea. I've worked in labs and such that had outlets labeled with the circuit number, and planned to do that just using a Sharpie marker. The color coding would work too.
