Blooming December 2017

I love the light purple line on Brunfelsia gigantea. I've never seen it before and can only assume the cold has brought out the color. Next week we're supposed to dip into the 20's so it's time to say goodbye to my giant beloved beauty.

Anything fragrant blooming for you?

Almost forgot that Oncidium 'Sharry Baby' is finally starting to develop a light cocoa scent.

Robert, I like the punchy pink color of your Sharry baby. Mine looks a lot different, with more white and less crazy color! I think it smells like chocolate/vanilla.

I wanted to tell you both of my dracaena fragrans are sending out spikes. I can't wait to smell their fragrance again. Xena has a few buds, they just started getting bigger. I'm excited to give a scent report soon lol.

    Robert, beautiful blooms!

My Brunsfelsia bloomed last month and then I had to bring it indoors due to a cold snap. Now it’s back to 70s again! Sigh TX weather!

All my babies are indoors now, so not very happy. My last set of blooms for the season might be my Nyctanthes arbor tritis. Love the fragrance.

    Elaeagnus x Ebbingei

Sarcococca Orientalis. Smells like lilac to my nose.

Osmanthus Fragrans 'Ri Xiang Gui'. Yes, again :)

All above plants are outdoors :)

wow!! Tom ...you have beautiful flowers collection , i like nyctanthes do you considered trade ?

    last modified: 8 years ago

Thanks talencat. I'm all for trading but nyctanthes is a sensitive plant and I believe any cuttings I send would probably die. I've never taken cuttings but some people can't root them. I don't know if I can. I'll let you know if I get any seeds from mine. I will say you should look up gardino nursery online. They sell the plant at a very fair price and their plants are always exquisite. I've ordered from them many times and I give them my highest recommendation.

So far I'm really liking the evening scent of Rondeletia leucophylla that I got from Almost Eden during their fall 2017 sale. It's killing me not to pot it up but since it's blooming I'm reluctant to mess with it and have left it in its nursery pot.

Robert, very pretty blooms! I am not familiar with this beauty. How would you describe the fragrance?

Dang it. I was hoping I could get away without a scent report. Laugh. I'll go with a fruity floral scent with a touch of spice.

Great blooms guys!! Here go mine

    Paphiopedilum delenatii x malipoense

This has just finished blooming so it technically belongs in november, it had a very light scent so I was a bit disappointed since I waited over two years for a bloom. Maybe next year it will do better.

    Boronia crenulata

I never found the ubiquitous b. megastigma so I settled for this and now I love it - for the lemony scent and for blooming all through the winter outside

and lastly one forgotten wallflower still persists!

I've been enjoying the scent of this paperwhite I got at Trader Joe's. The scent doesn't seem as cloying as other ones I've sniffed. I'm guessing it's Narcissus ‘Erlicheer’.

Robert, Those are Very pretty and delicate!

So pretty Robert!! Such beautiful blooms. At my end osmanthus is blooming and no more pics of it *wink*. B. gigantea is budding again. B. Lactea too. And b. Australis is gorgeous with all its blooms. I am thinking maybe I should keep all the brunfelsias as houseplants. On the bad side I think I am might be loosing my b. Americana.

So sorry to hear about your Brunfelsia, Jasminegal. :(

It's a Christmas miracle! My Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Snow Cream' from Plant Delights is starting to bloom. The blooms never opened last winter. So far the sweet scent reminds me of Rondeletia leucophylla but the scent is not identical. Currently I only have a couple of blooms to sniff.

Robert, what a coincidence..I was reading an old post from Mike about this plant and it really piqued my interest. It looks like a hardy plumeria. Is the fragrance strong?

Of course we get snow the minute you ask. Laugh. Even with the snow I can smell them if I stick my nose up to the blooms. I've read you can smell them from a distance when more blooms are open. If it flowers later on I'll give a scent report. :)

Wow, really? Hahaha. You definitely don't see snow covered flowers every day. Nice winter scene Robert. It was 80 degrees today so I'm only slightly jealous.

Tom I am really jealous of you now! Just back from Cancun and to say that I miss the beach and warmer temps is an understatement. Robert that paperbush looks beautiful. I am itching to try one now :)

Merry Christmas and a very happy new year friends!!!

I figured I'd break out the Nikon and share some eye candy!

    B. lactea
Dracaena fragrans. Both are blooming and the night air is filled with their luscious perfume. My mom sprayed some rosewater today and it reminded me of the way this smells..
Hoya australis smells like spicy chocolate, not my favorite. The bugs go wild over the nectar.

Someone tell Chrysler Imperial that it's winter and not spring. Please excuse the weeds and just enjoy the bounty of blooms.
Nyctanthes left me one flower this morning. How generous!

Jasminegal, now I am jealous of you! I've always wanted to go to Cancun. Their beaches have some of the bluest water I've seen in the world...I bet it was mesmerizing. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too and everyone else as well! :)

It was Tom...and the beach is absolutely gorgeous. Some pics!

Wow jasminegal. Stunning. That water is magical. Down here Palm Beach almost has water that blue..almost :)

I want to say dracaena fragrans is still pumping its beautiful scent into the night air. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

Sounds lovely, Tom. I've decided the evening scent of Rondeletia leucophylla is too strong for my bedroom and is interrupting my sleep. :)

Very nice Robert, I'd love to have a plant that fragrant in my bedroom haha. So it must be easy to grow and bloom indoors?

Yes. So far it's blooming away in a sunny window. :)

That was my next question! I definitely want to try this plant now. Thanks Robert.

where can you find this fragrance plant ?

Hi talencat, I got my Rondeletia leucophylla from Almost Eden.

I used to have Rondeletia splendens on my wish list but I read that the scent can sometimes be absent. It sounds like leucophylla is a nice substitute.

Hi, Tom! I grew R. splendens one year and wasn't thrilled with the scent when I finally caught a whiff.

I was delighted to find a lone Jasminum sambac 'Belle of India' bloom amongst the jungle that is my bedroom. Apparently it's getting enough light to bloom and to continue to grow! It's a great treat to be reminded of summer when we're about to be blasted with single digit temps at night.

Robert (zone 7a, Oklahoma) thanked talencat

Thanks for the link Robert. Congrats with the jasmine bloom. Florida is cold as well. It's been in the 50s and 60s during the day and 40s at night. Some of my plants have yellowed from extended cold like Brunfelsia gigantea and some of the Hoyas. I really do hate this time of year for some of my tropicals. Stay warm!

I hope everyone started off the New Year on the right foot! It's supposed to be in the 30s for 4 out of 5 nights. Needless to say I brought in a lot of my plants. The ones that can take it are still outside. My neck and back are so tight from the cold wind. Must stay warm. ;)
