Succulent too heavy for stem.

Hey guys, i'm very new to this site. I received a succulent, (i'm not sure what kind it is, I will share a photo as well) back in about April/May, and I had it in a mug because I was very low on money and spaces to put it. I know the mug wasn't good for it, because it trapped the moisture in there, but I was unfortunately stuck with it until about last month. My landlord allowed me to borrow some planting 'pots' and some dry potting soil. I've heard that succulents need the cacti soil to thrive, but again; I am very low on funds. I would be able to get the new soil soon if necessary. But the main problem was that while in the mug, it was very tiny and had to grow tall to peek over the mug and get the sunlight. It unfortunately had grown too heavy for its stem and it fell over and crushed the stem :(. I'm very upset because this plant was a gift from someone very important to me, and I feel like I've failed the little guy by ignorance and unfortunate circumstances. In closing, I am asking for help; i'm not sure what to do, to leave the stem the way it is and keep it propped up, or to cut it and try and save it through planting it again. I have him propped up with chop sticks, and a pen; and then twist tied very lightly but firmly to the pen and propped up with the chopstick. It also gets very cold up here in MA, and i'm worried about keeping him too close to the window. I'm very worried and could use your help. Any advice is welcome, and thank you in advance.
