Do you think it's Pubicalyx RHP?

I just googled red buttons and a lot of the pics show flowers like yours. I think the coloration has to do with environment its grown in. Maybe needs more heat/sun to get those "red buttons"

You can have flowers too if you just do what I did--I bought one of almost every hoya I could find; if they didn't thrive and grow well I gave them away; if they died I didn't replace them....I was left a with a handful of plants that liked my conditions, did well, and eventually flowered....I probably have far fewer hoyas than most people here, but those that I have flower reliably for me...

Lydia Kennedy--you could be right---I will be interested to see what the flowers look like outside in the sunlight come summer....I've wanted Red Buttons for years, and never succeeded in getting it---seems like it always turns out to be some other pubicalyx....I'll keep trying...

Shelly, I'm going to do what youre doing. This is my first complete yr since i got back into hoyas (grew them 15 yrs or so ago) we just had a couple of cold fronts that got down into the upper 30s. None have croaked yet but i do see the ones that suffered. The main sulker is elliptica. Dropping leaves like crazy. She was getting ready to bloom too. Half are in my greenhouse kept above 45° while the others were under the canopy which just blocks the northern wind. I left the ones growing on the tree and the ones that are entwined together out in the elements. We even had snow for an hour and the ones left out did wonderfully. If elliptica could not make it in the greenhouse, I will not be growing it again. Slowly, they are showing me who suffered...mathilde is a trooper, still growing vigerously!....all the pubicalyx dragons and reg did great. Im very surprised at how tough these plants are.

Arletta--it smells like all the pubicalyx/carnosa group, which to me is kind of like spiced banana with an undercurrent of incense :-D....anyway, it's very nice and around 2-3 a.m., if you happen to be up to visit the bathroom say, the whole kitchen smells like it--very tropical and strong....

Lydia---I think you'll like my plan since it involves buying lots of new hoyas....there are people who are willing and able to go to huge lengths to bloom these guys, including grow tents, humidifiers, big light banks, special fertilizer blends etc. but that's not me....this way I may not get to see some of my favorite blooms, but what I do have are happy and healthy plants and I can get the flowers with only a slight effort....With your location, S. Texas, and your greenhouse you should have a much wider range of success than I do here in cold and dreary Pa....

And don't feel bad, I hear Hoya elliptica is hard for everyone, even the pros....

Congrats on the blooms :). Red Buttons is probably my favorite Hoya I have ever experienced. I know I say it often, but the fragrance of it reminds me of a Tootsie Roll Pop ;-).

Moon I think you arent wrong, my rhp hasnt flowered yet but Tyrion loves rubbing on it, also since i got it he has been stealing tootsie rolls from my candy dish (note he doesnt eat them, just rolls on them) so i can easily assume a simillar smell

Thank Shelley! :) I used to have huge hoya carnosa about 15-20 years ago, blooming almost all the time (!), and all I remember is that I couldn't stand with the heavy and far too sweet scent. That was too much. I had to give it away. Now I read that many people love carnosa scent so I started with it again, give it another chance. Maybe the smell is different depending on each plant of carnosa, or conditions it lives in, lol ;)
Accidentally I got few more unplanned hoyas like: bella, publicalyx pink splash, curtisii, lacunosa eskimo (or rather krohniana, can't tell). They all are just rooting now and obviously I can't wait to get blooms and feel the fragrance of them! :p

Hm, maybe you know about any website which describes how various hoyas smell? It's hard to find anything. And yes, I know it depends on us, our noses ;) But some average info to take ;)
