Did you peel it to see what was underneath and pull off all those old roots too! That's moldy for sure!!! Looking at it in that condition doesn't tell you anything. It might be fine beneath all the moldy exterior or half rotten.

I don't know if this will apply, but I bought a bulb after Christmas last year and the poor thing was coated in a heavy gold wax. Decorative of course. It felt kind of soft underneath. I carefully peeled away the gold, (they never should have done that) and I had to just keep peeling away layers that had dried and otherwise gone bad. Instead of a nice fat bulb, I ended up with a small one. BUT it did survive. I let it set out overnight (I don't know why) and then planted it in damp soil but did not water it until it got dry. I summered it on my porch in a protected shady spot and the bulb grew very nicely!

It is a nice fat bulb now and maybe one of these years it will flower.

Moral of the story,,,always try. Nothing ventured,,,,nothing gained. Rosie

I really don't like those waxed bulbs. It's so sad that they just wither away in there! I'm sure yours will thank you soon with some flowers! With the right care they can bounce back from a lot of mistreatment.

Thank you everado. I didn't really want an amaryllis. I just felt so sorry for it. They did it so it would be attractive to buy. It was the last one. And I just wanted it to live. Now it is nice & sturdy, potted, in my laundry room where it is cooler and has no leaves. I let it go dry before I brought it in. I am sure it will start growing again. I hope. Rosie

I peeled some of the husk off and washed the mold off and am letting it sit in cornmeal (supposedly a mild antifungal) for a couple days. The bulb looks fine. Hopefully it was just surface mold!
