Don’t do carpet? Do wood.

I agree with Sophie Wheeler, if it is possible you should do wood instead of carpet!

Wood is gorgeous, but often more expensive than carpet. At least in the short run. (I'm old enough to have only a short run, actually, so I think that way.) And what if one prefers carpet?

A couple of thoughts below, leaning toward the brown tinge. Of course I don't know if your fireplace stone looks like this, but I added it in just to show how a carpet could tie the colours together. I like the dark one, but I think either would work, depending on what feel you want in the room.
