Guide for buying lamps

I just moved into a new house and need to buy bedside table lamps for 3 rooms and several lamps for end tables in the great room. Can you tell me how to go about choosing the correct heights for the lamps? Where should the shade be compared to eye level while seated? I'm overwhelmed and would love your opinions and/or guidelines.

that's what i was able to dig out but i'm sure there are more things like what shade works best for what etc

also, task lighting(for reading, writing etc) might differ from more ambient lights like these ones. in terms of hom mmuch wattage you need, whether needs to be movable to be directed, etc

meanwhile hope it helps somewhat
