awkward dining room help

my husband and I moved into our house this summer and I am stumped on how to fill the 11x10 dining room. All 4 walls have some sort of break in them (entrance to kitchen, entrance to living room, and 2 low windows) What is the best way to fill all of these walls and corners without the space feeling cluttered and/or unbalanced? The dining room is more like an eat in kitchen for the two of us, casual, used for all meals, a place for paying bills and writing cards. The orange paint and lighting fixture came with the house and the table is 42 inches in diameter. Any advice/insight is welcome! Also I was having issues posting before... so if this is a duplicate I apologize!

    wow what a nice room

yes..new light..and you can find so many great ones especially if you're willing to look into vintage (they used to have better quality..and now have better price))

agree curtains..and do install them higher one of the reasons being-these lovely frames should be seen!

you don't really need to fill the walls and corners unless there is something you need to incorporate like a storage piece(corner shelf maybe then?) or/and something you love, like art..and here, you can start small..say a piece or two next to the door first..and see how you feel about it..do you want to have more? are you willing to wait and collect slowly? In short I wouldn't be in too much of hurry. Your art will find you. The room will be better for that.

I'd put something on the table like flowers or a bowl of fruit but I understand it's not large and is heavily used, so I don't know how much space you've got there.

beautiful house from what I can see..congratulations!

A rug, window treatment & some art. You don't need to fill every corner. You will be amazed what a rug will do to fill the room.

A colorful, perhaps Oriental, rug that picks up the color of the walls would really make a huge difference. Make sure the rug is quite large to make the room look larger. All you need is to have 1 foot of flooring around the edge of the room. The next step would be drapes that reach to the floor and some colorful and interesting paintings. By that time your room will be close to looking furnished. A beautiful bowl or other centerpiece would also add a lot to this room. You could have two chairs flanking the window and put the centerpiece on one of them when you need more table space.

I agree-drapes, artwork, a chandelier and a centerpiece for the table. Perhaps a small console in one of the corners to hold paper, writing supplies, etc.

2 white corner cabinets from Ballard Designs.

You don't need more furniture and you don't need to fill the corners. It's a nice room. Are you considering a new paint color? I don't believe I could live with the orange.

I agree with the above: drapes, a rug, some nice art, and a centerpiece on the table. Maybe a tall plant sitting on the floor in one corner. Done.

Thank you everyone, for your fantastic suggestions! I can't wait to get started on step 1, the rug! @littlebug, the wall color is for sure changing, probably to a neutral gray of some sort. The orange is very intense :)

I have never liked the orange colors, but somehow that color is very appealing to me in that room!
