What kind of budget do you have? Can you buy cabinets, or do you need to work with what is there?

Wow, you do need help! Paint is your best friend here, and cheapest option. There is so much 'cabin fever' and 'busy-ness' going on in this space; first things first, clear the clutter. To open the room up, paint those walls and ceilings, taking care to make sure the knots in the wood will not bleed through the paint (Zinsser is a great primer!). Also if possible, remove the A/C above the window. If money allows, perhaps you could enlarge the window to allow more natural light into the room. I live in a low-light house which had all-timber walls everywhere, and over time we have painted them out which has visually made the spaces bigger. One word of caution with low-light rooms and white paint - never use cool whites, as they tend to make the areas more grey and cold. Go with slightly warmer whites, but use the brightest white you can find on the ceilings - and remember that the colour of your floorboards will influence the colour of white you use on the wall. My floors are yellowy-orange, so I've had to tread very warily to avoid the white paint from taking on a pinkish or yellowish hue!
