I also have a dog and two teenage boys. Wood floors are not fragile and when they do show wear, they don’t look terrible - it’s “character.” And they can be refinished to look new again. Wood look tiles are, by definition, fake wood. And they have become so popular that I think a backlash against them is almost inevitable. They do look really nice in some applications, but I would chose wood OR tile, depending on your climate, HVAC plans, and house style.

I say wood or vinyl tiles that at wood like. They come in strips as opposed to squares and look like wood but wash like vinyl. We had lots of tile in our home when we purchased it and it is very hard on your feet and back, tiles cracked and every little bit of dirt shows up and is tricky to scoop up with a broom.

Unless your climate is tropical, the LAST thing I'd want is a house full of tile. Reasonable care on a wood floor will allow it to outlast your stay in the home by YEARS, and yes it's warmer, softer underfoot.

Tile is awful to live with in a whole application. I work on a concrete floor for 4 hrs once in a while and my feet and back kill me. I think wood is a nice choice but to be honest wood and dogs are not a great match. We have 2 bigs dogs and we went with vinyl plank in our walk out since the dogs have a free access dog run so in and out in all kinds of weather and on the main floor we did a laminate that looks like slate and in 10 yrs neither floor has shown any scratches and both are so easy to look after for cleaning.

I would do wood and put indoor outdoor rugs in the traffic areas. Your boys will be gone soon, you'll be getting older and tile can be really hard on the legs and back. Work with a good flooring company to get the most durable finish and forgiving floor stain color. Keep in mind that there will be some scratches from the dogs that will be noticeable.
