This made me think that for us to dig around too much will disrupt their channels too much, for them to continue working for us efficiently. Because they have to build new channels for moving around. Similar like after an earth quake damaging our streets and cutting off established routes.

Interesting. I didn't know they reused the channels/tunnels.

Especially since we're dealing with non burrowing worms some worms might get trapped (alone) and not be able to find a partner: no cocoons: our loss.

Epigeic worms don't make permanent burrows because it's impossible to do that in the loose material they live in. They do sometimes choose areas to hang out in - I always see them anchoring themselves halfway through the holes in the worm factory trays - but I don't think an individual worm ever stays in one spot for long.

Soil dwelling (endogeic and anecic) earthworms in the garden do make permanent or semi-permanent burrows, especially the deep dwelling large "nightcrawler' types (US and Canada nightcrawlers, that is. Confusing terminology because "European nightcrawlers" are an epigeic species. But I grew up calling the really big dark worms "nightcrawlers" and that seems normal to me.)

Anecic worms even take over others' abandoned burrows and live in and maintain them, so individual burrows can last for many years. These burrows are really important in soil functioning, helping air and water and plant roots and all kinds of soil life move through the soil, which is why no-till farming and gardening is considered beneficial - digging, plowing etc. really destroys a lot of infrastructure that takes time and energy to be rebuilt. But I don't think that applies in a worm bin situation.
