I agree with everything Sharon posted above. Lower and center art about 5" above the sofa. Remove the mirror. Maybe you have a table it will work with in your foyer. Are you searching for a rug to anchor your seating group? Check out the selection at homedecorators.com.

I agree with all Sharon said. In addition, I would consider centering the sectional in front of the tv. This would involve pulling it out from the wall. You would be able to walk behind it.

I think the wall with the tv on it looks fine the way it is. Here is an example where someone felt they needed to do something more with the wall around their tv. Sometimes you just need that negative space or walls become cluttered.

Textured wall panels would be nice on that wall ... you can paint these too. Maybe paint them the teal color from your painting?

May I add, it would be ideal if you had a large entertainment center to house your tv. I realize this is an additional cost to you. There are reasonable ones at Ikea.

Having said that, if you stick with the stand you have now, please do not add anything to the wall....it will just look cluttered.

Thank you all for the comments. I added a couple extra photos to give some different angles of the room. I have a mirror on each side of the painting, these are not centered over the sectional but they are centered on the wall. I think lowering these is a good idea. I removed the blue vase as well. I have been thinking about adding a rug with some earth tones. I'm looking to find one more rust colored, possibly with some blue in there to tie into the painting.

juchuang, I like the style of those paintings and I have another wall in my dining room that needs some art. I would like to keep the art more masculine than flowers though, I do like the set with the blues and browns.

I agree that the coffee table is too large for the area and a smaller one would allow better access to the sofa.

As for the vases, I would also agree that they are too small. Should I replace them with larger vases? And if so what color, I'm afraid the wall will be a little too bare if I take those away completely.

Also, I've been thinking about replacing the curtains. Any suggestions on color?

Hi. The problem here is that you have a sectional that is and looks shoved into a corner. Please

1) Take the chaise end off the sectional
2) Move the sectional out from the window (toward the tv)
3) Place the chaise approximately where it is now, but at a 45 degree angle.
4) Place lamp between chaise and sectional
5) Use a narrow table in place of the side table with lamp on it
6) Buy a couple a very large light blue vases for either side of the tv. Add dark curly willow.
7) Move picture over couch so that it is centered over couch and lower it.
8) Eliminate mirrors
9) Lower red artwork near floor lamp
10) Buy some more substantial panels and a thicker rod. Hang rod 2" below ceiling.
11) Buy a smaller coffee table (a round one would work also)
12) Put one pillow on chaise and group three together on sectional.

Higher with drapes, lower with art. Chaise sectionals are a real pain, aren't they? Now that we can see the room, I'd invest in moving the TV to the wall where you have the art and mirrors. Hang it on the wall with the cabinet below it. Remove the chaise and put the sectional on the TV wall with the side table and lamp on the armless end of it. This will leave the longer portion of the sofa extended perpendicular to the wall and facing the TV. When you're ready to buy a new sectional, go for one with equal wings, no armless parts and no chaise, so it is more flexible. Apartment sized ones work in most small homes. Angle the chaise in front of the window with the floor lamp. Smaller, round coffee table, patterned area rug based on the colors in the large art piece. You should frame it and hang it 5" above the sofa.

Alright, I took the chaise off the sectional and moved the couch to the opposite wall as suggested. I am really starting to like this layout. I placed the chaise on the left of sectional near the window at first, but this did not leave much room to walk in between the chaise and the couch so I removed it. I am now thinking about adding two chairs on the left side of the room. I have also decided I am getting rid of the coffee table because it is too large. I will also be moving the painting on the tv wall to the couch wall and will be removing the mirrors as well.

Now, is it a good idea to buy 2 chairs to place on the left side of the room? I am also going to replace the curtains this weekend. My thought is to go with navy curtains and light gray or beige chairs. I am planning on purchasing new chairs and curtains this weekend so let me know if I should go with a different color scheme. I think you just chopped your room in half by doing this. I preferred it the other way.

I would go lighter with the rug color choice, rather than with earth tones. The couch is pretty dark already. I think the what folks may have missed is that your front door to the house appears to be to the left of the lamp now? And a breezeway (into kitchen?) is now along the length of the couch. I would go back to the orginial orientation of the room. It opened up the space more and I would take the suggestions about lowering the art and raising the curtains and I would stray away from any more lines, everything is feeling pretty angular. Add some swirls and circles, if you can with the rug, curtain and art choices. Just my tuppence. Happy Decorating!

I preferred it the other way too, with the suggestions I added. However, if you like it this way, it can work.

You have a big problem now, which can be fixed: there is a major traffic flow continually in front of your tv.

Here is what you can do: take the couch and leave it where it is, BUT, move it to the left, toward the window. Do not move it forward, only to the left. The tv then, will also be moved to the left.

Now, you have a cozy corner, with traffic flowing outside of it.

I think it can work this way or the way I suggested above, but the way you have it now, no.

Adding two chairs with a rug to tie all together, getting heavier, more substantial curtains, and moving the painting to your blank wall above the couch might give you what you're looking for. Moving the couch to the left may block the doorway. Maybe move couch a bit more towards the tv and get a long, thin console table for behind the couch for more of an entryway counter space type area. I think it's looking great :)

I think the rug is the key.

Since you have the couch moved already, can you move it to the left all the way to the wall (where the lamp is now). (Take lamp away for now). Do not turn couch, just move it to the left.

See if you like this set up. It will be sort of a cozy corner.

I love the color of your walls! I had a similar problem. We framed photos from trips that we have taken, and hung them around the TV screen. People really enjoy looking at them. I am sorry I don't have a better picture, I don't normally have that lamp in the middle of everything, but you get the idea! Good Luck!

I would put the sofa back where you had it originally. It looked best there. You had a nice flow between the dining area and now you are just cutting that room in half by keeping the sofa in the middle of the room. Your design dilemma was what to do with the wall above the tv which looked perfectly fine but now your getting into a whole new dilemma by moving the sofa around.

DIY photo tiles with your family pictures or maybe an artwork will do wonders with your TV.

Move the sofa back to where you originally had it. Center the TV on the wall.

For what it's worth, here's my impression: go back to your original configuration, but hang the tv on the wall so that it fills the wall space a little better (not too high -- just having it on the wall will make it feel like there's "something" on the walls). Then, replace your cabinet with a minimal etagiere -- more open shelving so that it's less bulky. Just put component pieces and maybe DVDs on the shelves so it's not cluttered, or "heavy". I really think it would lighten up and modernize that area, push it up against the wall, and give the feeling that something's on the wall.

Yes, move the sofa back - your room was arranged fine but it needed to be re-fined :) Move it away from the wall slightly so it isn't "smashed" into the corner. If it slides on the floor, use some of those sticky rug things or small blocks of wood between the sofa legs and the wall.

The coffee table is too heavy and large - go rectangle or glass if you don't have small kiddos.

I am surprised that no on has suggested hanging the TV on the wall. If you do have kids, the low cabinet and large TV is an accident waiting to happen. If you hang the TV, you will have a nice table top to accessorize.

Also as someone else mentioned, the artwork is too high and the drapes too low and the blue vase had to go. A fluffy light colored (white or pale grey??) rug would anchor all the pieces together and brighten the space. Then add some zip with throw pillows in your favorite colors. Don't be afraid to add color.

Back to your original question, I also thought my black TV stuck out like a sore thumb on the wall with nothing around it. I solved the problem this way. I think the metal sculpture above the TV is not the right scale, so I may replace it if I find something else. Hope this helps. If anyone can improve on my attempt, please let me know.

Right now your TV is the focal point instead of the fireplace. Remove all the small stuff around the TV. Put the two matching prints hung on the fireplace but reverse them and keep the round plate to the left. Remove the small vase underneath the fireplace. Too many small things starts to look like clutter. I would even take down that other print to the left of the TV. Not every space has to be filled. You can also add some books on the mantel. The eye needs to rest.

With the new arrangement, have you considered that when you walk in the front door, the sofa is immediately in front of you? I think there may be a better solution. Also, with your old arrangement the flow is better to the dining room for when you have guests, especially with a big crowd.

Don't be discouraged. This was my idea posted 44 hours ago and I'm sticking with it. Once the coffee is downsized the flow will be fine. I think a sofa table and lamps behind the sectional as eclary89 suggested 4 hours ago will create a sort of foyer for you. Try hanging your large piece of art on the wall above the sofa and remove the sticks and mirrors. Move in the dining set and let's take another look. Once you get a small round glass coffee table and a few accessories, this space is going to be great! The chairs you're considering will be perfect with the floor lamp between them.

Have you thought of just hanging your flat screen ? Then you get a little room on top of your media cabinet for a bowl or few books or even a real plant to display. I like the advise of removing the mirrors and lowering the print and centering it over sofa( in your original layout) . Hope this helps.
