I recently bought this beautiful oak dining table at a thrift store it’s unfinished not sure what color/ stain to color it. The dark blue chairs the hubby bought and he wants to keep them. Any thoughts ?

You could seal it or you might "stain" it with a dark navy and then seal it?

Also would like to change the fixture thoughts?

Regarding the light fixture, can’t really make a suggestion without seeing the rest of your Home ( the area adjacent). Looks like whatever you choose, probably should be something more contemporary, should be hung lower, approximately 32 to 36” above the table. Not sure, but others here will tell you how high.

I am having issues pasting anything but I would think something more modern would be better. Love the table and chairs. Maybe a wood housing with modern lights? Keep up the mix?

I have that same table ... and those same dishes! Very different chairs though.

Mine's over 30 years old and has seen daily use, so it NEEDS refinishing. Maybe that'll be a summer project. It was originally bought at a finish-it-yourself furniture place (you don't see those anymore, do you?). It was finished with a MinWax product called "Special Walnut".

    That blue dresser is lovely.

Wow thanks for the history. I bought it for 25 bucks and absolutely love the quality of it.

Do you think a antique oak stain and a gray or white bottom legs would look good? Or just stain it all?

I would consider staining it the same color as your chair legs, are they a walnut tone? General Finishes Antique Walnut, test any stain colors on the underside of the table. A new light fixture needs to be lower and you need at least a foot clearance from the table edges so you don't hit your head. What size is your table top?

Once you stain it you might try a rug under it. Great purchase by the way.

If I understand correctly, you're talking about stripping and refinishing this table, correct? I sounds like you're experienced enough to know now to just throw a coat of stain on it.

As for color, if you want a more contemporary look, go with a dark stain. Minwax has lots of options and has always worked well for me. If you want something more country/rustic, go for a lighter or natural oak color. If you want to go really modern, paint it white.

I'm guessing you'll go for a dark stain, so I would recommend either Ebony or Dark Walnut, which has a warmer tone than Jacobean.

    Good luck!
