What part of the country do you live in? Sunlight stimulates the bees to get out and about so you don't want a lot of morning sun. You can have some sort of buffer placed in front of the hive to direct them up on their journey and keep you out of the flight path. There are certain types of bees that are more aggressive and you should avoid given your close proximity to the hive. Even then, you'll need to re-queen regularly to keep them more docile.

Suggest you locate a local beekeepers group and visit their meetings. Ask your questions while you're there.

You have LOTS to learn before you obtain any bees.

I was only going to get any if I had a place they can be that won't disturb the hive from other people or my gardening. If it is relevant, I'd want a top bar hive, I am interested in beekeeing mostly for pollination, to help bee populations, and I have always found them interesting ... and to get a small amount of pollen / honeycomb for personal use, but probably would leave 80% of it for the colony. I don't think I'd have any opportunity to talk to beekeepers until the farmer market in May though.

If you are in a residential situation, it's likely that your municipality has guidelines for hive placement. some places also require signed "permits" from your neighbors.

The kind of hive you use should be what works well in your region. Top bar hives have limited uses.

Beekeeper organizations may meet monthly, year-round. Years ago, local libraries used to keep lists of local organizations, among them beekeepers. Or do a search for "beekeeper clubs in X county, state" - but omit the quote marks.
