Orchid newbie - dendrobium

Happy holidays to you all :)

In the spur of the moment I bought a dendrobium orchid a few weeks ago (not flowering). I watered it the first week, after which I read that Dendrobiums should be kept dry in winter.. however, it seems like it shooting up new canes.. should I keep it dry?

Its in a north-west window at the moment, with very short grey northern european days..

Hi Judith,

Your orchid is a Dendrobium nobille hybrid, it has flowered and after that it makes new canes. it is growing so it cannot without some watering and it needs light. That no watering in winter is to promote flowering but it has already flowered so some water will not hurt. Light is a problem at the moment you should put it on a cooler( 15C) place and as much light as possible. I keep my Dendrobiums outside when the minium night temp's are higher than 12-15C. In summer it need some shade and protection against snails.
