Everyday centerpiece help

last modified: 8 years ago

We eat dinner for 4 (or 5 counting the baby) at our dining table 3-4 (or more) nights a week and and will frequently have guests staying with us as well. We usually serve casually, Edith from the bar or even directly from the stove when it's just us. I'd like to add an everyday centerpiece that just stays in place, low enough that dinners can see across and I am open to suggestions. (I am not good with plants, so any greenery needs to be simple and it's not a necessity. You people are such good at finding things, I would love your ideas.

I've got the sideboard somewhat styled, but I am open to any other suggestions there, but I am keeping the watercolor (know it's not everyone's taste, but I love it and it is a nice piece). As you can tell my style is pretty eclectic, leaning towards (and I hope I am hitting it) a sort of sophisticated contemporty rustic vibe. I have lots of silver and cut glass, but really don't think anything would work here.

Thanks!

I think we have seen this room before;chandy talk? I think your room looks fabulous. I have found center pieces to look good when a table is not in use but to be in the way other wise. My MIL had a dining space never used unless her kids were home. She had a center piece there until we went to set the table and then it came off and sat on the side board until we left. When one eats family style with lots of dishes to pass--there just isn't room for such things in my world. Perhaps a runner would give you a tish of pizzazz and still not get in the way? I love the look of a well designed table scape but RARELY does one see one while people are actually eating. I think that is because there is no room for the food in most of them. In a home with servants Downton Abby style the servants bring around all the serving dishes...who lives like that?! In real life, in MY REAL LIFE a center piece would just be something to move so we could eat!!!

Given how rustic the chandy is and how long the table is, maybe a dough bowl will look nice and be durable enough to stand up to daily use... you can leave it empty or change the contents seaonally or make it useful with utensils/napkins.

I would do something like one of these. Think either would look great with your room. You can fill it with whatever you like - like the small cactus pictured, candles, some pretty branches.. I'm a fan of eucalyptus leave so did a centerpiece with that for the holidays (and they last forever..lol)

For a table that gets used daily, I like real fruit. The container can be as rustic or fancy as you like as long as it's safe for food. If it's the right shape, it can stay on the table during meals and people can eat the fruit. Obviously, it takes a bit of maintenance to keep it looking nice.

    LOVE your dining room!

I have this Irving Architectural Vase (triple rectangle), from Pottery Barn.

I have black stones in the bottom. Sometimes, I have round candles in it. Sometimes, I have fresh flowers in it. Right now, I have air plants in it. It's very versatile. I tend to use a runner because of all the wood furniture in my dining room.

Greenery certainly does warm up a space. My mom has kept a pothos in a large hand thrown pottery bowl on her dining room table for decades now - those plants are super tough. She moves it to the side of the room to make way for seasonal & celebratory centerpieces. There are any number of houseplants that require little light and minimal care and so many decorative containers that could be used - even baskets.

    And don't forget candlesticks...

Air plants require no soil and I give them a bath in the sink about once a week. My grandkids play with these plants (I have more in my living room and vestibule).

A nice tureen, a bowl of fresh fruit. You'll know it when you see it.

I like the idea of a runner (that doesn't reach all the way to the ends of the table). You could put a flat-bottom elongated arrangement of greenery along the center and add seasonal bits. Our kitchen table (oval, seats six) has an old round maple bread-kneading bowl with artificial greens. I keep a 6" flowering plant in the center, changing it out as the flowers fade: Cyclamen, African Violet, whatever is in season. A little $4 plant every few weeks is all it takes.

I hadn't seen your 'finished product', mojomom. Gorgeous!
