The overall media section is 83 x 50 (down to baseboard) could rip the whole thing out? Or do a hidden tv?

I agree rip it out and get a design that works for your family. This whole thing just looks over the top for no reason at all. I think part of it might go with the style of the rest of the house but we would need to see that, right now it is a rip out IMO.

is that whole thing built out from a wall? I see it's quite deep. Or is something behind that wall, like a hallway or something?

Agree with most. That stuff is pretty gaudy. Rip it out back to the actual wal and modernize it. The TV is a bit low, and putting it above would be too high for the current seating position. You could work some storage into it, and maybe even built-in bookshelves. Best of luck.

Put doors over the openings to use the indents for storage, add a floating shelf immediately above them and hang the tv on the wall only slightly above that.
