I agree on placement of TV as I would have preferred it over the fireplace but son (his house) insisted on it where it is. Thanks for the idea of balancing out the wall with black cabinet. Then perhaps landscape style artwork above future mantle.

Don't put the mantel up too high -- so many do that and end up with a really awkward look. Just above the brick and as wide as the brick would do. Rather than creating a floating mantel look, you could add a pair of vertical boards that cover where the brick and wood meet to cover any imperfections.

When you choose art for above your fireplace, don't settle for just anything -- something just to get the space covered. Wait till you find something that really appeals to your interest. Do you like vacationing in the mountains? at the beach? have a favorite hobby the family enjoys together? Also choose something that will enable you to add your favorite colors to the room.

IMO vinyl wood next to real wood is rarely successful.

I would have used the hearth material for the surround & I would mount the TV to the drywall because it's so very large.

What is your sub-floor; I don't see seams -- is it concrete. If so, you can add a pattern atop it that looks like brick or stone.

The floor is cement. A spacer moisture barrier from Home Depot will cover the cement then the vinyl flooring on top.

Tbh, these colors are not mixing well. The wood on the wall is a different tone than the hearth, which is a different tone than the hearth, which is a different tone than the brick. You have varying shades of poopy grey brown. Somethings got to go because it's not working together.

And a brown couch. It's not good together at all. Dog is cute. He can stay!

lhutch13 - please see original picture I posted on top ( not the modified version posted by Beverly). Hearth is gray and you can see some gray in the brick fireplace surround.

I agree the wall and fireplace surround colors are not ideally complementing each other. I also think the proposed flooring works with the surround but not the wall. Since the wall and surround are already installed, I would consider going with lighter-colored flooring and adding a lighter and solid-colored border around the fireplace to create a visual break from the current side-by-side wall/fireplace color comparison.

kind of curious why you just didn't do the entire wall in the slate? the two together just don't seem to play well. and now you're throwing in another wood tone/new texture in the flooring? which one is it? the flooring that the little chip is sitting on? that lighter brown shade? any way you can put that on the wall? seems to go better w/the slate.

can you mount the tv over the FP? I think it would look better. or can the tv go on the wall across from couch? that corner, modern looking console just does not work w/your rustic wood and slate.

I agree with a lot of what has been said already. Between the wood wall, the surround, and the floor, you're going to have too many competing patterns and textures.

I would put the TV flat against the wall rather than angling it and ground it with a much longer TV stand. You can do something like this for the TV wall:

If you want help with wall decor, then we need to see the walls. Please give us photos of the room from every direction.

Need stainless 6” border around stone of fireplace and no mantel. The wood and stone are too close in color yet don’t match so the stainless trim could resolve this issue. Choose a dark flooring. You need contrast in this room.

Here is example. The width needs to be sufficient to separate stone from wood. If you decide to do mantel consider doing it in stainless and possibly extend across wall to right side to balance TV a bit.

I am appreciative of all your comments. Unfortunately can't change the wood wall or the brick fireplace surround since this is my son's house and he has already done the work and doesn't have the funds to make changes at this point. I should have posted before he did the actual work for advise. So at this point we have to go with what's already there. Also....he insists on the TV staying where it is at - doesn't want to crane his neck to watch TV. I used Photo Shop to add a black wood fireplace mantle / surround - thoughts ?? This is the flooring that he will be putting down since it was given to him (free). However, the flooring is not down yet so that COULD be changed. The wall on the left has a large picture window and entrance door and the wall on the right is a solid wall where the couch would be placed. There is no wall opposite to the fireplace since that is open to the kitchen.

Concerning the floor - since this is in the Midwest it gets below zero and a cement floor would be beautiful but not functional for warmth and carpet would not be a good idea with the dog.

No on that fireplace surround. It is traditional and the wall is more modern. If he does a mantel do the stainless when he has the funds. Otherwise best to leave it alone. I know it is great to get free things but if it doesn’t work it will make things a lot worse. The floor is a huge block of color in the room. Be careful. Hate for more work to lead to greater headaches. Good luck. Come here first for future projects so we can help you and him avoid mistakes.

Thank you for the advise on the mantle. I removed it from the photo and changed the floor to Home Depot Allure 6" x 36" Pacific Pine Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring. This color flooring looks to have both gray and brown tones. Does this flooring look better than the brown vinyl as shown above?

Better, but something other than wood look would work better. Look for a darker gray/black slate. As one poster pointed out putting faux wood up to real wood never works well. I have one that might work for you. Let me find a photo for you.

I put this mock up together to help you visualize all main elements that can help this room work really well. Art over fireplace with some lighter background and then colors that pull sofa and flooring colors into cohesive look. I put a Luxury Vinyl Tile in a deep gray black on floor, then layered in a rug to also pull beiges and grays and browns together. I put a tripod floor lamp on right side of fireplace to balance size and visual impact of the TV. A black shade is key to create the balance. You will need more light for evening TV viewing as well. Hope this helps create an overall vision so when looking for flooring you have bigger game plan. At some point some type window treatment for the window/door wall will be needed.

what a wasted space! for what a entire wall with a hole ops fireplace in the middle? no sense

I am truly thankful for the positive suggestions and comments on my post and truly disappointed at why anyone would post such negative rude comments.

Mocked up vision of this room. Whole house has white trim so the white mantle may really work to separate the wood wall and brick fireplace surround. Flooring is brown and this picture shows a black area rug.

This mocked mantel still feels too traditional for your son's great, modern wall. And even with a black rug, the flooring doesn't really seem to go with the wall. I know it was free, but maybe he can sell it on Craig's List and buy the dark slate look that Flo suggested?

I am helping my son Renovate his first house, and I get frustrated when he goes ahead with something (or uses something that was cheap/free) that just doesn't fit together.

The white traditional fireplace is a design faux pas! A definite no. What about just staining the concrete floor and getting a great rug. Do a dark gray stain on the floor. I really hope the "free" flooring doesn't go down. But if that is in the cards, do a multi-colored black, gray and white shag rug for some softness, and to "warm up" visually the space. Just don't do a white fireplace surround. The black ladder corner thing, is cheap looking to my eye and I would wait until the other elements are done to do something to the right of the fireplace. Some interesting black shelving unit in a contemporary style would work, but I still think a black shade floor lamp would be the best idea. :)

The size and shape of floor lamp matter. They create a visual against the wood wall that enhances the wall. He did such a nice job on the wood, just wish we could have helped earlier, but trying to help you help him! Here is another example. Be back in a minute.

Here is another floor lamp example. Needs to be 60”-65” high and have a nice big distinctive black shade with metallic liner on shade if possible.

I would look for an LVT floor in a slate that matches the hearth. Keep it as simple as possible, i.e. large tiles, minimal grout lines, little texture. Get a focal area rug. Another matching dog wouldn't hurt, either.

I would not do a mantel at all. You don't need anything else on that wall except perhaps art.
