Finding a matching rug

Would this rug work with these curtains and pillows or do we need a solid color? Picture may be hard to see, but curtains are navy and off white, pillows are gray, navy, and navy and off white

No, that rug doesn't work with the drapes. You don't need a carpet over a rug.

I'm 50/50 on the whole rug on carpet look, but I've seen some photos where it works. Do you think the rug doesn't work with the curtains because it would make the room too busy? This one has the same pattern as one of the pillows so I thought maybe it would work.

I'm not a fan of rug over carpet -- always makes me think something is being covered up/hidden. But that's me, others seem to like it. If you do go with a rug, I wouldn't use one that duplicates the pattern. Perhaps a more subtle pattern.

I’m not a fan of the rug/carpet thing either, but the real problem is too many similar geometric patterns. You’d be better off with a solid or textural look, or something like an oriental pattern. This isn’t exactly the idea, but similar:

The patterns are too similar and there are a lot of dark colors. Start with what you definitely want to keep. Is it the drapes?

Could we see several views of the room?

Why do you need a rug?

Also that pattern is extremely trendy right now but it will look tired in a few years. Unless you are very fond of it, I wouldn’t add in another piece with it.

The 3 similar patterns in the curtains, rug and pillows won't be very attractive. I would look for a different rug and pillow combinations. Patterned drapes are much harder to work with, so bring home lots of rugs and pillows and test them out. Look for contrasting patterns and do opposite color schemes...ie: white backgrounds with navy and grey accents, navy backgrounds and some solids.

An easier way to decorate and for a calmer room is to go with a simple rug - a wool sisal on your carpet would work well. Let the interest be in the drapery and pillows. This pattern has been overdone and will be easier to change drapes and a few pillows and the cost of a new rug down the road.

Our carpet definitely needs replaced after several years of walking. No stains really or destroyed just aged. We would love to get new couches, but not a priority right now. So updating the colors and decor was what we're trying to do for now. Getting little things at a time, far from finished. I like the navy, gray, off-white look. We have espresso furniture pieces and distressed white 2 tone pieces. BUT I feel like a 5x7 rug under coffee table would tie it all together. I understand that's not everyone's cup of tea, but without the extra color I think it looks boring and blah. We actually had a rug there before this update and initially I didn't like the idea, but after rolling it up it looks bare and my table doesn't pop - it blends...

I'm a little surprised that you chose those drapes considering the colors of the carpet and the couch, but it makes sense since you're considering replacing the rug and couch in the future. I sometimes put rugs over carpet and it can really tie a color scheme together, but with what you have right now I really don't know what kind of rug would be best. Hopefully someone more savvy can make suggestions. This is my living room with an area rug. If I had to do it over again I would choose a larger size.

The colors actually work with the couch color and carpet is a light neutral beige.

still have a few pieces off wall, so disregard that. In the process of hanging them.

What your room needs is a stunning piece of art for over the sofa. That will really help liven up the space and pull it together. You may not even notice there is no rug.

From there, you can continue your other decor items

Not interested in artwork. We'll figure it out.

CDR, good call on the artwork. I know Jackie isn't interested in feedback on anything other than the rug - so Jackie, cover your eyes! - but if it were my room, that’s exactly what i would do. One large piece there really elevates the space.

These later pictures give a much better idea of your space, and everything looks much more attractive. A rug in the same colors as the curtains but with a different pattern (stripes?) might finish off the space nicely. The colors would have to be as strong as in Maureen's picture with the blue curtains and blue rug to have a similar impact.

Anyone know what brand this thick 8x10 rug might be…it has no tag???
