Hi, it may seem obvious, but if you don't want to detract from the counters or compete with the two-toned cabinets, go for a simple white subway tile. There are so many options now, you can find subway tiles that are elongated or have beveled edges (or both ) that it allows for something more interesting than a typical plain tile.

Alternately, fish scale tiles in a white or light gray would also look great in your space. Would love to see what you end up picking, the kitchen looks great so far!

That's right. If you want to keep the countertops as the focal point, and not let this new backsplash detract. Let's see... you don't want color. No patterns. I am a bit bored with plain subway tiles. These black ones I think would look very sophisticated, and they're different. Black is neutral, and like clothes goes with a lot of things without them "clashing". Would make a good backdrop for anything you add to the counter ( jars, pitchers, knife set, etc...) I think it would look super modern and not like every other backsplash they'll sell you when you shop for tiles - or ones you see in other people's homes. I think you'd have a lot of compliments.

nothing different behind the stove. just do the same tile all the way around.

you could also do a light gray tile in a glass or ceramic
