Hardwood Floor vacuum recommendations

Our house is all hardwood- dark wood, french milled. With the exception of bedrooms and stairs we have about 2,500 plus square feet of wood floor, 3 kids, a dog and 3cats.

We have a central vacuum system but the suction is weak. I’ve tried commercial dust mops, Shark vacuum and several other broom/swifter type tools. Any recommendations on the best hardwood vacuum with high suction power, advice on what’s worked best for others I’d greatly appreciate.

Do you know why your central vac suction is low? Ours will get low over time if it is not cleaned, but when operating normal it has strong suction. We have a Vacuflo cyclonic which doesn’t have a bag, but a screen up inside that I have to brush off.

Have you had the service for the central vac out to look at it? If its performance is much worse than when it was new, there may be a clog somewhere or there may be a secondary filter in the main collecting area that needs to be changed a lot more often. https://builtinvacuum.com/flowchrt.html

Canister vacs with a fresh filter/bag every couple of weeks (or every time you vacuum the whole house) work well on hardwood when you have a good floorbrush attachment. You may need to replace the HEPA filter quite often, too, like once a year. No recommendations on brands as the one I have (and friends have) closed a few years ago. I suggest going to a good local vacuum store to try out what they have. It's important to pick one that is comfortable to use, not clunky, or earsplittingly noisy, or with attachments that can't be changed without infuriation, or with a retractable cord that sticks every time it is used.

I have hardwood floors, and I have Miele canister vacs. My original one is something like 18 years old, the "newer" one is somewhere around a decade old. All they need is routine maintenance (like belt changes), no repairs in all these years. The regular flat floor attachment (no beater bar - never use a beater bar on hardwood) has never, ever scratched any of my floors. The attachments are super-quick and easy to switch out. You'll pay a lot for a Miele, but you'll probably never have to buy another -- only reason I have two is I used to have a split-level and wanted another one for the upstairs!

I like the Roomba for hardwood floors. My Bissells have had stronger suction power than my Sharks.

I use the Roomba every other day on all the hardwood. Twice a month I move furniture a bit and go over the floors with my 12 year old Miele --it is lightweight, easy to pull and does great job on the upholstered furniture. Then, if company is coming I use a microfiber mop sprayed with enddust. Final a (very) damp with Bona Professional. My floors always get raves
