Using multiple backsplash heights

We've started our kitchen remodel and almost ready to start installing our cabinets. Our corner wall cabinets aren't attached to any other wall cabinets, so I was thinking of a 20" backsplash just in the corner and a standard 18" backsplash under all other wall cabinets.

We use the corner as an espresso machine/coffee making station so the extra height would be nice. I don't want to raise all the wall cabinets because I will have issues with the tops lining up with the freestanding cupboard and cabinets over the fridge etc..

Rendering of the corner design is attached.

Do you think the difference in backsplash height would look funny or even be noticed? There is filler and crown molding up to the ceiling so the filler over those cabinets would be 2" shorter.

Best,

Jay

I don't think I would do it. You could compromise and make them all 19"....

Thanks for your input. I can only raise the corner wall cabinets. If I make the others 19" then I will run into issues with alignment of my freestanding cupboard.

Will raising the corner cabinets throw off your top trim? I think the trim difference would be more noticeable than backsplash heights. No matter what you do with your cabinets I think the backsplash should go from counter to cabinet.

I don't think I would do it. I don't think there is enough gain by raising them two inches and I will look off. The better option if you really wanted to have more height there would have been shorter cabinets...but honestly I don't think that would look great either.

It will only throw off the reveal of the filler piece at the top of the cabinet. Take a look at the rendering and you will see the cabinet, the filler, and the crown.

On the corner cabinets, 2 less of the filler will be showing.

I've asked the designer to update the rendering with the corner cabinets 2" higher. Once I have the updated rendering I will post it so everyone can see.

Do you have a wall you could put a dedicated coffee bar on? There are some awesome ideas if you Google it.

You cannot stagger only the height of cabinets. You must also stagger the depth. Otherwise you get those hideously amateur hanging Chad molding returns. Molding has a projection as well as a height. And it all has to be designed properly in the beginning if you want staggered height. You cannot start making up things at installation time.

Why I would not care for it is this: The variation of height of the cabinets on one side of the window and the range hood varying from the height on the other side of the window and range hood. And in such a small amount that it may just look off rather than intentional

There would be absolutely no Chad molding returns necessary. All 3 corner cabinets would be raised together. Look at the picture.

Not enough upside to justify the downside of maybe making the whole kitchen look off.

I'm puzzled by the drywall in between the pantry cabinet and the drawers next to the DW. Is it there for structural reasons? If so, I'd think about making that pantry deeper so it's flush with that drywall extension.

The small partition wall is no longer there. It was left in place when previous owners renovated the kitchen 20 years ago.

It was not structural so we ended up removing it. The pantry will now abut the drawers next to the DW.

I've asked my designer to update the rendering including raising the corner cabinets by 2" for comparison.

I will post images as soon as I have them.
