I would try painting your walls first - the wood is a nice tone that seems to work okay with the other elements. Choose a medium gray to bridge the space between the dark island and light backsplash.

Doug Walter Architect, yes, doing pendants over island, husband doesn't want white cabinets so would a light grey be okay? Also, when I make the changes you suggested should I get rid of the lamp on the counter? What should I put on the counter? Basket of fruit or varied glass containers filled with lemons or something?

I would paint the island before I painted the perimeter. The wall colour is what is bringing the room down to me, though.

Personally I don't care for grey on grey kitchens (but that is of course purely subjective). I don't know how easy it will be to find a grey that coordinates with the wall colour, so are you willing to paint the walls in addition to the cabinets? Plus it's time consuming to get a good long-lasting paint job on finished cabinets so be sure you research thoroughly to learn what must be done for best results.

Take this picture and throw it on one of those paint visualizer programs to see what color range to go with. Of course, get an actual sample before you paint but it might help zero in on some options... Maybe a color just a shade darker than the white trim moulding or even something fun like a deep yellow (I just got SW Bakelite gold for my mudroom). Lindsey is 100% right about painting cabinets.

Lindsey, thank you for your comments. We painted the island that color grey and yes, your absolutely right about finding a grey to match that green. So, yes, we are indeed painting the kitchen! I painted the island a year ago to judge wear and tear with daily general use. So far it hasn't been a problem which surprised me to be honest. I was expecting little chips and knicks but haven't found that to be the case.
