Do you really like ..................

daylilies that poly a lot ? I don't like them much . Same as I don't like daylilies that are sold as simple blooms but then I get them and they grow with extra petaloid material .....sometimes lots and sometimes just one little screwed up petal in the middle . I don't know if it has anything to do with me being a type A personality .but I like a daylily to look like a daylily.

It took me a very long time to come around to liking double daylilies for the same reason. I guess I have gotten over that hump because I now grow a number of daylilies that are doubles ........but it took a very very long time .

Anyone else have certain daylily traits that you avoid if you possibly can ?

Signet-I too don't like doubles. They don't look like daylilies and just look messy to me. I am down to two: one is a neat layered double, and one just has an extra petal once or twice a season. Polys are interesting. Really raggedy teeth in a daylily also look messy to me. Yellow is not a favorite color but I do have some mixed in to brighten the garden. Not many are needed because many of the other colors have yellow throats.

DebbieOn , the daylily is my preferred perennial too That is why I grow a couple thousand of them including my seedlings but I do dislike it when a daylily that is sold as a normal 3 petalled daylily grows those little pieces of flotsam floating in the center of the bloom and does it on a fairly regular basis and no one thinks to mention it in the description . To your point I am sure that if the description stated that it was a trumpet shaped daylily, you would not buy it because it is not something that you like. I find those daylilies with the little bit of extraneous petal material very unappealing . It can be a beautiful plant but that little bit of unnecessary material can ruin it for me .

Brad I feel the same way about doubles. There are very few that really " do it for me" . I think out of all the doubles it is the "hose in hose" types that I find are not too bad . The rest I agree are like you said, messy looking. I always look at them and think if I wanted a chrysanthemum I would grow a chrysanthemum . I personally don't grow a lot of daylilies with "teeth" as again I agree with you , they just look messy. That is not to say that someone else cannot love it . It is just a personal preference of mine .

I just wish the descriptions of the registered plants were more accurate.

The only daylily trait I don't care for right now are the newer crosses that look like someone stenciled on the throat color. For me the blooms lose the soft quality, teeth are growing on me, don't have any of either of these.

I'm not much of a fan of lots of types; spiders, open form, old fashioned trumpet shaped, doubles. That being said, a particular daylily in any of those forms is able to win me over if it's special enough.

I like it when there's a rare poly bloom on a nice already big flower; though I don't tend to be crazy about regularly polymerous plants; but I do like Octomom because I've seen it do 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 all together on the same plant on the same day (photo to come when we get to the letter O).

I'm also not too crazy about really messy ones (double + spider + poly).

I think at heart, I just love the bagels (edges, eyes, teeth are all welcome and I adore watermarks).

I used to be anti-double and anti-spider/ufo when it came to daylilies. One of my good friends loves the spiders and doubles. He has slowly managed to get me to like the spiders/ufos. I now grow quite a few spiders/ufos and they are some of my favorite daylilies. I only grow a few doubles and I prefer the hose in hose, and the ones that are rather uniform in shape. But my favorite is probably PEGGY JEFFCOAT and it does not fall into either category. The one thing that I do not like is the extra material that sometimes shows up emanating from the throat. If I had a daylily do that on a consistent basis, it would be gone. I also don't like the constant canoeing of petals, or the ones by design that canoe in the throat and then flatten out.

Daylilybedmaker Interesting , I was just the opposite . I started with UF's and Spiders and didnt much care for bagels. That started to change about 3 years ago and I have since added quite a few bagel forms and I love them . Interesting too that PEGGY JEFFCOAT is one you mention you really like . Me too! Its petals are full enough and flat enough that it doesnt look like an unmade bed. I have tossed a couple of daylilies due to the extra petaloid material ( these ones constantly had it and weren't really singles and weren't really doubles either) . Turfed 'em ! Unlike you however I do like the dayliles that narrow at the throat and then flatten out.

I don't like doubles yet..don't dislike them as much as once did. At one time I didn't like spiders and unusual forms, but love them now. Not overly fond of yeallow or white although I grown some of each.

I love polies - now. When I first started, like most of you, I thought spiders, UF, dbles, weird but now I have most of them. The ones I really don't like are the bearded and toothy varieties, small teeth are o.k. but big ones are a no-no for me. I also don't like spiders that have very thin petals. Kay, I love yellow in the garden but it has to be a soft moonshine yellow and not a golden yellow. I have white planted beside purple daylilies, it really draws the eye.

I love daylilies with eyes when they poly. The others don't do that much for me.

I have seen some that I thought looked quite pretty, while another poly did not impress me at all. I think it just depends on how "tidy" the flower looks
