Try replacing those triple lights with recessed cans that focus accent light on the dark stone fireplace. That will brighten it some. You still need additional table and floor lamps. Ceiling light won't do much for this room. I generally see ceiling light as the ambient light to turn on so you can see to enter a room in the dark. Once there, you can dim or turn off that light and use lamps to warm and cozy the space and make it inviting. Reversing your fan direction to pull warm air down from the ceiling in winter, and cool air up from the floor in summer will be helpful. I'm not sure it is well located to perform that function though. It may need to be lowered. Perhaps an expert will chime in about that, If you'd take a photo of the furniture arrangement from the upstairs, we could help determine the best way for you to add task and accent lighting where you guys live (below the window and door frames.)

I would agree with decoenthusiaste. The fan seems way too high both visually and to function effectively. Besides switching to recessed in ceiling locations, these could also be anchor points for a track lighting system that might also fill in the enormous amount of ceiling surface. Besides lighting...another thought I had was to consider a softer ceiling paint color, like a dove grey....something to complement the walls but not as dark as that. My 2 cents.
