I have been crafting original lighting since making a first lamp of "found parts" in 1994..... back when the flea market pickins' were good and cheap. I have also restored and revived many a treasured lamp, chandelier or sconce as well for my clients and customers.
In my style, I hope you will notice attention to detail, some whimsy, and an appreciation for vintage lighting, art & artifacts, and industrial design. Specializes in one of a kind custom fixtures.
I build and often design these projects in collaboration with a creative group of Bay Area professionals specializing in interior design, architecture, glass & metal fabrication, and finishing, Many of the designs are "one-off" commissions that were constructed around a unique found part or object or inspired by a photograph.
(Because I get a substantial number of requests, I should clarify that, at this time, I do not specialize in recessed lighting or lighting systems.)

Jim is a local treasure, really!!! I was seriously stuck on my kitchen lighting after looking for fixtures for almost a year, and quite distressed! Then I remembered having seen Jim's work and found him on google. He agreed to work as my 'consultant' or, as I like to think of it, "my lighting therapist". He encouraged me to buy an antique French chandelier (from Vermont!!!) that I'd really liked on E-Bay but other advisors had insisted was too risky a purchase. And he assembled and hung it. Then he designed/fabricated both a vintage over-the-sink fixture and a simple globe fixture for the middle of the room. Now I enjoy both that elegant "dining fixture of my dreams" over the dining table, and excellent work light in the rest of the eat-in kitchen. Each fixture is quite different from each other yet they go together beautifully, and suit my eclectic Victorian/Zen/Junktique sensibilities....and my moderate $$$ resources. Now its June 2018, more than 1.5 years since we completed this project and I am still so very pleased and grateful.
Update: October 2018: Jim just repaired, rejuvenated and improved a fun and funky old artist-made floor lamp (Crusty Custom #29 was its name...) for me and with new parts and a shade and a finial from his collection its got a new life and new charm!

I've worked with Jim on several projects. He is incredibly professional and personable. I've worked with Jim on larger and smaller scale projects and found that he puts the same level of care and detail into any size project.

Jim Misner makes incredible custom light fixtures - he is a true artist. We have one of his creations ( a "Light Opera" variation) as our living room chandelier, and more of his creations for our kitchen overhead lighting (3 separate pendant fixtures) plus 3 sconces - really cool looking original pieces using one-of-a-kind components. Not cheap as factory-made but well worth it. He is also really mellow and easy to deal with despite our being neurotic perfectionists.

Jim created two unique and charming chandeliers for our barn (hanging from 30 feet) out of vintage olive buckets. More recently Jim restored an old sputnik light fixture which was in pretty bad shape, bent, tarnished, and not working. Both times I was extremely pleased with the result. I find Jim to be knowledgeable, creative, and easy to work with, and couldn't recommend him more highly for custom fixtures or restoration.

I've known Jim Misner for the past 20 years and used him on my design projects personally and professionally. He was one of the first craftsmen to use a "green" approach to his lighting fixtures, repurposing everyday old and new objects. He was at the forefront of the industrial look that has taken over the design industry today. I've always appreciated the quality of his workmanship and never had any complaints or problems with his fixtures. His lighting can fit into many different design projects adding just the right aesthetic to make your room stand out. Jim is a pleasure to work with, his great work ethic and design input as well as meeting deadlines in a timely manner within your budget makes my job much easier!

Jim Misner designed light fixture for my entire house in San Francisco. He was resourceful and creative with found objects. In my entry hallway he bought reproduction glass globes, then using cast iron plumbing parts as the base. He hung marble balls from a cluster of grapes found at flee market as pendants on other sconces. Chandeliers were made from hand blown glass and repurposed gas gages.
On another project in a barn in Calistoga he used large French tin wine containers as sconces with lights inside that shot light up, down and out on the walls.
He is a wonderful person with a gentle manner. His creativity only adds to the practical lighting solutions he resolves with his clients. He is making modern fixtures now that are beautiful.
