Thanks for the link Robdb8, unbelievably fine sans at that website. Those sans are as well grown as any of the Thai plants I've seen, and they are phenomenal growers.

Those big hallii varieties are especially choice. I have hallii species (Baseball Bat), hallii Blue form (Blue Bat), and hallii Lundi (Lundi Bat). Years ago I had a very small Pink Bat but lost it. Of these, hallii species is the most impressive and is on my short list of favorite sans.

Did you copy and paste info into a translator website to get that comment about growing sans in gravel? Sans aren't particular about their soil mix as long as it dries out fairly fast and has good drainage. Mixes should have a lot of aggregate in them, not so much organic matter. But as long as they're fertilized the organic can be zero, as in gravel only. I discontinued Turface/calcined clay materials, experimented with it for several years and everything rotted that had even a small portion in the mix. Pumice isn't available in the east, I know it's available online but I need it by the cubic yard, so I'm adding small river rock to mixes. Hardly a good substitute but the best aggregate I can find other than plain ol' perlite.

Russ, I just used Google Translate on the pages. I did a little searching around the same site to find the comment about growing in straight gravel. As far as hallii are concerned, I've wanted one since I saw and read about them. I'm concerned about the fact that they're notorious pot breakers, I like growing in clay pots for that added drying out factor and would worry about them cracking.

Robdb8, in my experience if you use a very airy potting soil with a lot of aggregate, sans will do fine in plastic pots. You might consider this for hallii if you're afraid it will break an expensive clay pot.

I've never heard of hallii being singled out as pot breakers. I assume it would be from strong, stiff offsets expanding against sides of pots, but virtually all of the thick, heavy leaved sans are capable of doing this. I have tons of clay pots but rarely use them, however I think clay pots are far more attractive than plastic, even plain ones without decorative sides, and they do provide weight for tall plants against wind.
