Detergent for sensitive cat

Any recommendations for a detergent to wash blankets for our cat? She is very sensitive to the smell of detergents after washing blankets that are either polyester or cotton.

I have a Speed Queen top loader and use Tide Plus Bleach powdered, full fill warm cycle with an extra rinse and have to resort to a third rinse and no fabric softener. It can sometimes take a week or two before she will use the clean blankets again. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I've never had a cat that sensitive, but had you considered a container of one of the scent free allergy friendly products for just her loads of wash? Or, possibly one of the products made for baby garments. It sounds like the scent of Tide with Bleach must be off putting to your pet - I use Tide original powder and don't particularly notice a scent after washing and drying.

Try a free & clear (free of perfumes and dyes) detergent.

Tide free and gentle or persil sensitive I use when my daughter is here and has severe allergies. When a she’s not here I use it on pet bedding and always comes out sparkling.

I use this detergent for my cat's blankets ecover-zero-natural-laundry-liquid

It has three enzymes which could be a good thing in that enzymes assist in cleaning, but some folks/animals are sensitive to them. Fragrance free.

Our cat is formally feral and she is very sensitive to smells, viewing aromas as threats. Ecover causes no reactions with her.

Howabout trying Charlie's Soap? Or try to find Sports Wash which is a odor eliminating detergent for hunters.

Synthetic perfumes are not good for a pet to be laying its head on or putting in their mouth (toys). I do understand the pets things need laundered. As mentioned above use a perfume free detergent and rinse well. No fabric softener. Also hang them out in the sun or wind after washing.

There are a few more earth friendly detergent choices but again make sure they are perfume free.

If the problem continues with perfume free...order some STPP from Amazon...use it in the first rinse as it will strip all residue from the textiles.

Thank you all very much for your suggestions and I will start trying them after our moving later this month. She did not have this issue in the past so I am not sure if it was some kind of change in the Tide that caused it or could just be that she is getting older and, well, things change.

MamaP - We did find that leaving the blankets out in the sun helped some but being the PNW, sun is not that readily available especially when she hacks up a hairball in the Winter.

I appreciate all of the comments.

I use a Free & Clear type detergent. When the bedding is particularly ripe, I'll add some Borax. A true HOT water wash will remove a lot of dirt with less detergent.

I Dr Bronners or all free and clear and 100% organic dryer balls for all washing including our pugs bedding. Our 14 year old pug has life threatening allergies and the above items have been fine. I also have double items for her and let items air after clean before use.

I also think that hot water rinses, or warm water rinses, will get out more detergent than cold water rinses.

and using white vinegar in the rinses will be kind to their sweet little noses and headbones.

Just wanted to report back that I finally tried the All Free & Clear and it worked like a charm! She did not hesitate to lay on her blanket after it was laundered. Thanks for all of your suggestions.
