I always use chlorine bleach on my whites load -- kitchen towels and dishcloths, white and light bath towels and washcloths, socks, other cleaning rags -- so, yes, those items are separated from darker, non-bleachable items.

I also separate some types of items by fabric weight so drying performance is consistent regard to underdrying or overdrying. E.g., shirts sometimes go with a set of sheets.

Jeans are always separate from anything else due to the dye bleeding and also for drying performance.

It depends on what you have and how much you care about the results. Some dyes will transfer. Other dyes will not. Some fibers are really good at picking up dyes, too.

Ah, ok....so separating by fabric weight/type and bleachable vs non-bleachable is what's important, not color. That makes so much more sense!

The first time you wash anything, do it with like colors, especially solid colors, so any bleeding doesn’t visibly alter the other items too much. Or wash it with rags.

I separate everything.

I've always sorted my laundry into about 4 loads....whites, light colored, towels, jeans and very dark items can go together, IF they've all been previously washed. If you don't sort your clothes, they will look dull and dingy.

Yes to if you’re washing something with strong color for the first time, definitely do not mix with whites. After a few washings, you can probably mix.

As someone who grew up with pink and gray undergarments that were supposed to be white…I always sort by lights and darks.

Once a month at most? An "all white" load" in hot with a bit of bleach.......and no more often than that!

Zero fabric softener/use wool dryer balls. Fabric softener destroys fabric absorbency..

Result? Bright white sheets and fluffy towels all the time, nothing else faded, or ruined.

Nope. I separate by wash temperature (warm for most things, hot for sheets and towels, cold for delicates that don't get dried), not by colour.

Just use color catcher sheets and the colors will be fine. I like to dry like things together so lightweight items don’t wrinkle.

Separating depends on the colors, dyes, and fabrics involved. Indigo dye used on denim jeans may bleed for a long time, even in cold wash water due to effects of detergent.

Do you HAVE TO? No, assuming you're not washing a brand-new red sweatshirt with them, your whites probably won't come out pink. But neither will they come out crisp and white-white. Which means they'll gray and you'll discard them sooner.
