Hawaiian Swirls was added few season ago, lovely color.Here Lies Butch was purchased as a single fan in spring of 2016. It bloomed last season and opened flawlessly. I love the big,fat edge on this one. Hearts Abound was also added spring of 2016. First bloom last season, really needs to establish here.Happy Returns was most likely in all of our gardens at some time. I had 5 of these, down to one. I had to make room for daylilies I NEEDED ; )

Hathaway Cottage was new to the garden last summer.

Heavenly Bengal Tiger is such a bright flower.

Heavenlt christmas cactus is nice and tall.

heavenly Yellow Lion is a nice late-blooming variety.

Heaven's Portals has been in a bad location for many years. Still it managed to bloom every year. We plan on moving it soon.

Hello Screamer is a southern bred that does well here.

Hidden Jewel, a small flowered one, was a bonus plant a few years ago. It has turned out to be a real gem. it's hard to get a good picture of it. It always looks like it is lit from within.

One of my favorites from this season is Hip Hop Music. I hope it comes through these nasty temperatures ok.

Holy Sombrero is a big super bright yellow. It was a bonus plant, but I think it will be a keeper.

Hook 'Em Horns is relatively new to the garden.

Horsing Around is one of our favorite toothy pinks. Unfortunately it got smashed last summer when a pine tree fell on it in a storm. the plant survived but the pods on it did not.

Some really nice H's so far. Sherry: Got a kick out of your little saying. That's also a really nice shot of Howdy with the Hosta. Can you grow Hostas in sun up there?........Nan: Many lovely ones as usual. Love Hidden Jewel as a smaller flowered one. Now on my list. Did manage to get my hands on Holy Sombrero this year after you gave it praise this summer. Had been on my list, but hard to locate. Here are the H's that I grow:

Half-Moon Key: Vigorous grower. Blooms for a long time. Starts out blotchy for the first week and then it hits its stride.

HANDWRITING ON THE WALL: Love the eye on this one. It has taken a while for it to get established.

HARPER'S BAZAAR: Great plant. Vigorous. Pollen and pod fertile. Blooms mid to late season. This photo was taken late in the day. It is tall and stately.

HEARTBEAT OF HEAVEN: Another one taken late in the day. It is usually darker in the am. Slow to open on cold mornings.

HEAVENLY ANGEL ICE

HEAVENLY PINK FANG: Not well budded. I should move it to see if it improves.

HEAVENLY TWISTED: Very tall. Bud count is 8 to 12.

HEMAN: Big plant and flowers. Will be splotchy at times, It tends to bloom early mid season and bloom for a long time.

HERBGIRL'S CHERRY MOONSHINE: This thing is loaded with buds and blooms for a long time.

HIDE AWAY: Nice big blooms. Not my favorite kind of ufo as the petals go every which way. I prefer more uniformity as opposed to this unruly one.

HOLLY DANCER: Nice saturated red.

HONEYCRUNCH CUPCAKE: I love this double and I don't grow many, because they are not my favorite form. This is not the best picture.

HONEY ON MY LIPS: First year in the ground and I love this unusual looking beauty. I plan on using it for my hybridizing program. Once I figure out my program. It just looks like it would be fun to work with.

HOT LAVA: It is taking a long time for this one to get established. Not sure about this one. But I said the same thing about the next one and I now love it.

HOT SEAT: It is striking and does well for a Maryott in zone 5.

HUSH LITTLE BABY: A great older pink by Sikes. Taken in the afternoon sun.

Maryl, here it's more like " can daylilies grow in the shade". Most of mine don't get enough sun. I have one hosta called June, that's in the sun here till 2:00pm. Looks great in July.

Thanks Sherry. I'm not a Hosta collector, but the ones I've grown need quite a bit of shade here. Seeing a Daylily blooming next to one is note worthy. Howdy seems to do really well for you in part shade...........Maryl

Maryl , previously, I would have thought that you being in zone 7a your growing conditions would be different than mine .......being in a 6a might have meant slightly different temps before but now I don't think so. I think the differences maybe more in how the winter affects the gardens . Anyway, I grow lots of hostas in full sun here ...full drought here ......and they are in direct sun all day. and they do marvelously well. The last two years their leaves have been affected by late frosts but I have never had any trouble growing them in full sun.

Sherry, I really like your photo of Howdy in front of that hosta.

David, I haven's moved my Heavenly Pink Fang since I put it in the ground, but can't say I'm impressed with it. Holly Dancer and Hush Little Baby - two older ones that still have a place in my garden and will continue to do so for a while yet.

Mantis: Really interested in Heidi Hugs. The picture on the database makes me wonder if the budding on top will make for a jammed up blob of blooms though. Will be interested in your take this year. Here's my Honky Tonk Barbie. It will fade in the PM to pale pink when temps are high, but the form and good bloom habit so far have left it out of the purge.

Number one ......Howdy ......what a gorgeous clump I grow Howdy here but it is not that same vibrant color .

Number 2 Hemstitched .......OMG! GORGEOUS! On my "gotta have it" list

Number 3 Harper's Bazaar . Drool !what intense color ! ....another for my list .

Number 4 Honeycrunch Cupcake .......now that one is interesting .

HEMEROCALLIS MINOR - very fragrant. I've been trying to not kill it for years as it just hangs in there.

HOBO PIE SATURDAY NIGHT - Newish here and no good photo or info yet.

HOLLY DANCER - good increase, always some to sell or donate and it will remain here as a good pop of color.

HONKY TONK BLUES - plunked down in the border and I forget about it but when I remember it I think - that's a nice one.

HOW BEAUTIFUL HEAVEN MUST BE - Love it, but I must have divided it down too far so now it's one struggling fan. It's evergreen.

HUMUNGOUSAUR -my biggest problem with this one is remembering how to spell it.

HUSH LITTLE BABY - one of the best for last. Does not rebloom here but it's lovely and such an unadulterated color.

Thought I would show an image of the back gardens that are ringed with hostas in full sun from morning till about 6 p.m.

Signet, plants are placed in pots only initially. They go into the garden withing 2-12 months. Some are on longer probation if their performance seems dubious.

Maryl, the Ashwood picture shows probably a few plants in proximity. Heidi Hugs is not top branched. As to whether blooms are crowded, I don't remember.

Mantis_oh .That is very very interesting . I have never tried that . I have only ever received the plants , set them to soak till I can find a spot in the garden . I wonder do they increase better in pots ?

Signet, I have many daylilies that have lived in pots for many years, never seen the garden. If a daylily is inclined to be a quick increaser, it will do so in a pot, and split the pot. If the plant receives good care in a pot (soil change, pot change, watering, some fertilizer etc., then sometimes the more reluctant ones may actually do better in a pot. I have many, a couple hundred at least in pots, and at least 75 that have lived in the same pot with little care for the last 20 years even. It is alot worse now that we have closed two long beds, and now I have added about 120 more to pots!! There must be at least 400 out there now in pots. I am determined to solve that dilemma this year, lol

DebbieON......since we live in the same (cold) zone I was surprised to hear you grow so many in pots. I was wondering what you do over the winter with the pots to protect them, if you do? I always assumed in our zone they weren't suited for container culture but now I am fascinated.

DebbieOn, that is interesting information. I guess where you are there is lots of snow cover all the time during the winter . Any time I have tried to keep any plants in pots ( other than daylilies which I have not tried mainly because I am afraid to lose them) the plants end up dying if the pots are just sitting on the ground . I guess maybe because of our frequent freeze/thaw cycles here . The only way I can keep anything in pots is to sink the pots in the ground which if I am going to do that I figure I might as well just plant them directly in the ground. Weird that others have so much success doing this .

Debbie, I am curious too! I've never grown daylilies in a pot. I do grow hosta in pots but those go in an unheated shed for the winter, come out in March most of the time, weather dependent.

Plants do not increase better in pots, but they are able to grow without domination by neighboring plants in garden. Also receive more TLC in pots. If you have a space where the new plant will not suffer from neighbors, and if you water regularly, and if the weather conditions are favorable, then direct planting in garden is superior. But I've lost far fewer after I switched to initial pot planting.

I am really awful about taking care of potted plants, I either forget to water them or overwater them.

Hampshire Hoyden is really bright, but hasn't been a good plant. Just hate to get rid of it.

If I had daylilies in pots that would be the end of them. While lots of things aren't expensive in KY, water is, at least in my town.

I will search for an article I wrote several years ago, I think it was for the AHS robin regarding overwintering in pots.

The last two winters, I have been lazy and just left the pots out with no protection, two winters ago, we had good snow, and everything was fine. Last winter, we did not have much snow and I was worried, but I was very lucky and did not lose anything. This winter I again left the pots unprotected, but it has been extremely cold, but hopefully all that snow came in time! However, I would not recommend doing that. I don't do that with my more expensive plants. I will look for that article.

Brad, Although water does not cost anything here, we are on a well, and I do not water. I have bought several plastic kid swimming pools, and fill the swimming pools with rainwater. The pots sit or are rotated in the swimming pools. I collect extra rainwater in barrels from the shed and garage roofs, from spring on, as we do get some pretty droughty summers here as well.

I have about 40 plants in pots right now and I sink my pots in my vegetable garden after I till it for the fall. Some plants seem to do better in the pot than in the ground (BLUE EYES GLANCE for example). Others seem to increase at a great rate once they are out of the pot. Once I take the pot out of the ground, the ones in the pot grow at a faster rate, because the soil in the pot warms faster then the ground. I remembering visiting Darryl Apps' place in New Jersey (before he moved to Wisconsin) and looking at his sales area and everything was in pots. I remember buying DRUID'S CHANT and another one and the pots were packed with fans. Once in the ground, they went bonkers and had to divide that same year. As far as watering them through the summer. I place them on the edge of my vegetable garden, so they get the benefit of regular watering while the ones in the ground have to fend for themselves.

same here . I love the fact that the edge is flecked with the 2 colors . Really unusual . Normally you have one color edged by another and sometimes even a third thin edge but this one is flecked . Love it in cream or white . It has gone on my " gotta have it list"
