If they still have roots they're probably still alive so theres hope! Try keeping them in a consistent temperature, they prefer desert-like conditions. Use a toothpick to make sure your soil is moist all the way to the bottom of your pot. Don't water the plant again until the soil is dry because over watering can cause root rot and that aint good! I used to bring mine in and out too. Now I just leave them in unless nights will be above 40 for a few days. I would keep them in the house and cut off the tops. Wait till spring and maybe repot. The cactus and succulents forum on Gardenweb may be able to give you more detailed advice. Good luck!

If it was rotting you did the right thing. Rot will spread very quickly so you had nothing to lose at that point.

Hi Rachel. Sadly succulents do tend to let us down at times. Strange, considering the natural habitat for cacti & succulents is made up of, baking hot days and freezing cold nights.

I live in the SE of England. Our climate is very mixed. Perhaps the most important aspect is. The British climate is always moist. Our summers are moist so causing sunburn etc. Back to your plants. My experience with succulents, they are so tempemental. I have lost loads of them. Some that have suddenly died, I have cut back and soon new growth has sprung up. As a scientist, I have often taken the fallen leaves etc, cut away the rotten portion and inserted the remainder in pots or trays of a peaty substance and sharp sand. Soak the compost and let it drain before inserting the cuttings. Within a few days you will find the cuttings are producing roots. This must be natures way of continuing the life cycle. It's a good point to remember. Every part of a succulent will be a future cutting.
