Weird Room Design.

My husband I are renting an apartment with a strange design, and we're not sure how to arrange our furniture.

The tv outlet is in a recess to the side of the fireplace, and because the internet hookup is also there, and the wires aren't long enough to run under the carpet, the tv is basically stuck there.

The back of the couch is really wobbly and needs support; it seems to be doing okay at the angle we have it at right now but it's driving us both bananas; it's not a very user friendly set up.

A friend suggested we purchase a sectional but we really don't want to buy more furniture, as we already have a lot and we move a lot as well; the less stuff we have to haul around the better.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, we have no idea how to arrange this room !

ok I get it, but why tote around a flimsy sofa? at least do yourself the favor of getting rid of that one, and getting one that is stable. Does not need to be sectional. But in reality, chances are that will not hold up many more moves. Sell of the things you have a lot of or dont need, and buy some things that will last.

As to the tv, you can buy cable at any hardware store with the connectors, tack it along the trim if need be but really with the couch having to be supported and you not wanting to buy anything, not sure how to help? or what else you have that could be used. i would at least pull the tv forward so it is flush with the fireplace.

There are very few things in my opinion that a person should spend money on to make their space look and feel great. A bed, a proper dining table and a couch should be the things that your money goes towards. Honestly, if your couch is driving you nuts because it is slightly broken and the placement feels weird (agree it looks awkward) then you should buy a new couch. No amount of reconfiguring the layout of this room will take away from the fact that the couch doesn't work for you. Have a look on craigslist or at second hand stores too - you might find a gem. I agree with your friend about the sectional.

It should be facing the fireplace. You should have accent chairs on either side to facilitate a conversation space. I wouldn't go area rug on top of the carpet, and anyway, that rug is way too small for the space - should fit under the coffee table, accent chairs and couch, not just the coffee table.

Also- take all those knick knacks off the mantle - it adds to the clutter. If the mirror must stay (I prefer art above fireplace, as mirrors just reflect the opposite wall and don't do anything for the space) then at least a plant and some tall candles at either end. Maybe one photo. FInd other places for the rest of the stuff, it's too small and too much. Try to find a lovely art piece to go up there instead. You can pick you room accent colors from it. It should be the same size as the fireplace insert, not bigger.

Society6 (among other sites) has a lot of inexpensive posters and canvases from artists to choose from. Fireplace wall is the focal point, so make it worth seeing.

@Cara, I think that mirror is attached to the wall,as it is a rental... but i could be wrong and if i am, i would put that on the back wall of the dining room to reflect the fireplace

Since everyone else has already told you to buy some real furniture, I'll skip that part and just tell you what to do with the TV. Get a longer coaxial cable and pull the TV out of the corner and put it flat against the wall across from the windows. Your NEW sofa goes in front of the windows perpendicular to the fireplace and facing the TV. (If you're hauling this sofa around, you can replace it with one that isn't rickety and you won't have any more stuff than you had before.)

I suspect you can't remove the mirror, but you can restyle the mantel with some larger pieces of art, if you have them. Or if you're trying to avoid owning any kind of permanent stuff, stick some large candles of various sizes up there and get rid of the rest of the clutter.

I don’t seem to see the weirdness. Looks like you can have a sofa facing the fireplace and TV stand located as is but pulled forward. You’ve got a plug to add a side table and lamp or floor lamp. Don’t buy a sectional if you move a lot, it may not fit in a future move. An ottoman works to put your feet up.
If you have furniture to use here, add some photos of those pieces.

Here is what I've done since your help

That's a definite improvement. Can you pull the TV stand forward a bit more, so it's even with the fireplace plane? The sofa really should float off the wall...but since it needs to be stabilized, I guess this will have to do.

And pull your coffee table to the sofa, 18 inches between them.

Use that little rug at the sliders or front door.

try pulling the tv out a bit more and angling it toward the sofa, might make it easier to watch.

There is no decorating rule that requires the sofa to touch a wall at all times :-)

Pull the sofa forward and center it on the fireplace. Get rid of the rug - it's much too small for the space you have.

^@ izeve, the OP's sofa is broken. That's why it is leaning against the wall per the original post. I would get rid of the sofa too since it is broken (not stable) and too small and also appears to be part of a larger sectional which is not appropriate for this room.

Have you considered fixing the sofa? You might be surprised to find out what a few nails and some wood glue will do. If you can move the sofa you will have a lot more options. Also, I agree with a few others that the sofa should be centred with the fireplace.

Flip the sofa upside down and see if there are any fasteners there holding the back of the sofa up. It sounds like they need to be tightened?

The room is very dark. You can add the lamp in the living room space. The classic staples that will be sure to light up your living room.

Thanks for the tips ! The sofa isn't actually broken, it's just really flimsy and poorly made; we've tried tightening the screws but to no avail. Wood glue sounds like it could be a good solution.

There is a recess light just above the fireplace that provides more than adequate light in the evening, however I think the lighting in the pictures is just a problem with the camera, as it is quite bright with the blinds opened.

I have also pulled the tv out and angled it towards the sofa and put the rug in front of the sliders and it looks much better now, thank you :)

If it won't stand on it's own 4 feet it has to be broken...or maybe it is part of a sectional sofa and needs the other one or two parts to stand on its own. No manufacturer designs a sofa that is meant to lean on a wall in order to use it. In either event, leaning it against the wall should be a temporary, short term solution until you can find a repair to make it steady on its own feet or replacement that doesn't need to be against any wall. I, too, find Craigslist a good place to search if you need something inexpensive or if the repair doesn't turn out right.
