Begin with the accent walls and then take it from there. That's what I would do :)

I would go gray.

Light gray or dark gray? The area connects to the living room which is not shown so I am wondering if I should go with the same color all around...

A medium to dark gray. You could vary the gray in the living room a couple shades up from the color strip.

A couple of options for you:(All Benjamin Moore) 2159-60, AF-155, or CC-270

I know you want to save the existing yellow, so maybe paint the blue walls a lighter shade of your yellow. I feel this will open your room substantially and give the illusion of more space. Looks like your fireplace is beige though and salmon colored furniture. Your yellow now seems quite bright to me after seeing this. I understand, It could just be the picture.
Personally...if this were my room, I would paint the entire room one color... a (grey with a touch of beige) in it to unite the fireplace.

The salmon furniture will go! I will have a beige sectional with chocolate brown accents. So actually Greige in the living room might just work. I was thinking this color but not sure it would work for the archway with the yellow against it:

Actually, there are a million shades of greige. I highly suggest you move your new sofa in first. You'd be surprised how a couple of shades OFF in your paint color can affect the entire look of your room. Find a piece of wall artwork you love. THAT will give you the jump off point for your accessories. Pull that accent color into at least 3 areas of your room.

@dslyder Yes that is definitely the photo, the yellow somewhat more subdued/creamier in real life :) Do you think a cream shade could harmonize with the yellow and keep the space open as well? What do you think of :

@dslyder, Photoshop. Yes the balancing act in this room is due to the concept of keeping the yellow, while respecting the beige fireplace and red tones in the floor. I tried a number of beige tones which clashed with the yellow, and so if you do repaint the entire room, you'll have so many more options..

I like the yellow on the walls, it looks more in the warm/gold tones. If so, there are many shades of blue to complement a warm yellow that are much prettier than what is currently there. If you don't like blues I would still stick with warm tones. For example, terra cotta, rust, and reds of which there are many shades to choose. Because your floor is cherry, it is already a warm tone. Bringing in darker colors doesn't necessarily darken a space. Bring home different samples to try on your walls. Small samples of paint are available to purchase at major home improvement stores. You can paint sample colors on the walls and live with them for a few days to see how they appear in different lighting. It saves time and money in the long run.

HC-36 is a beautiful color! The key will be how it looks next to your beige sofa. Do you know the name of your existing yellow?

A bright semi-glossy lime green would look great. Go to Lowe's and get Valspar semi-glossy interior with a bright white base in a bright, saturated lime green.

As I say, it was a balancing act. Now, lighting is a consideration, it could look somewhat more muted in "real" life.

How about all walls in living room/dining room painted the same color. Use the yellow in the kitchen as a peek a boo color only. Then use the same yellow as a 'punch' color for the living room? Just an idea.

I agree, I'm now leaning towards painting both spaces the same color. My only concern is when you're standing in the yellow kitchen (see attached photo) the double sided archway needs to match with the yellow here also... (note: the appliances will be stainless)

You can always paint the blue parts white, or add trim and faux paint to make them appear to be stone. That will work with all colors. Here are some faux stone looks plus a window trim that you could immitate on your "arches."

for me, it's definitely NOT green. Then your room will look like red/green all year long. The floor has a reddish cast. I would go with off white or a pretty tan. You could also do what I did, take the color of the one gold wall, buy a gallon of it, and buy an off white you think works. Do a 1 part to 1 part and mix them. If you want it lighter, then mix more of the off white. I did that for my kitchen ceiling. It kept the off white in the same undertone as the wall.

I actually think it's a pretty color; maybe just not so much of it. I'm quite partial to shades of blue, so I would personally leave at least one accent wall (the fireplace, probably) depending on what colors your decor is and paint the rest the yellow that is already present. I'm assuming that is not your painting in the picture, because the blue actually works well with it. I do find myself drawn to the green that Genevieve suggested, however.

diyher - I will definitely go with off white/cream or tan! I like your idea of mixing the paint, except I have no idea what the yellow color is :( I will try to match it to a sample strip. Thanks so much for your help!

Just pick up all the yellow and gold paint strips you can find. Bring them home and place them around areas, against furniture, near curtains etc, even different times of day, and at night. Once you find a color or 2 you think you want to use, buy one of those sample jars of paint and paint at least 1 to 2 foot areas on each wall and watch again how the light hits it and changes color. If you still like the color, then you can buy the gallon can with more confidence.

The reason why I had chosen the green is that those 2 walls are asking for a lively colour, they are the pillars of this room and were meant to be the focal point ,they want to be noticed not tuned down. That the way I see them :)

I love the medium gray idea for a more moderne feel. A beige would blend in too much with the fireplace and you want that to stand out.
I know white is a little boring but on that space white would look very nice as well.

Hi everyone! I finally decided to say goodbye to the yellow and paint the entire space and archway in Benjamin Moore Shaker Beige

Now, my question is: What color would you paint the kitchen/hallway? I'm guessing it would have to work with the tiles and cabinets, without clashing with the Shaker Beige since it is a rather open space... Here's are some photos of the kitchen (appliances will be stainless)...any thoughts??

Hi Mary, love your place! :) I'm glad you're doing away with the yellow. I think you'll be much happier with a unified and more neutral look. I really liked the Hepplewhite Ivory color you posted above. I think that would work well with the shaker beige you've chosen. Congratulations on the new place and have fun decorating!

that tan looks just like the Behr paint I did my family room next to my kitchen. So you are keeping the blue wall? I didn't have time to catch up on every single comment :)

Hc-45, used this in several projects but also check out Hc-44 Lenox tan- this color seems to go with everything.

Keep in mind when your trying colors that they change based on lighting and any surrounding colors.

When your looking at swatches, if you find a color you like & go 1 or two shades lighter, depending on your lighting in the room- it will be more accurate to what you initially picked in the small swatch. Good luck & have fun!
