I have a little information now about what will work. I will start with a hybrid Persian lime that is readily available here. The best information I can find indicates that Kaffir/Makrut is only compatible with lemons. There is some research about Kaffir on C35; but the experience is WAY too new to understand long term issues

John, I saw one at Home Depot today... "KIEFDG" - that would mean its on Flying Dragon. I will keep looking - - curious if it will ever show up on Volk, Carrizo or C54/57?

Last time I got budwood from UCR CCPP I asked them about rootstocks for Hystrix. They said it seems to work well with any but they have it on Carrizo.

I doubt there are many if any long term studies on Hystrix/rootstock combos as this variety is not something that is grown on a large scale.

I will continue to ask around.

Thanks for the idea re: Volkameriana; it is a lemon, so it should work. When my tiny trees are big enough for taking buds, I may start with half hybrid Persian and half Volk. I will report on successes or failures.

Why would you use a rootstock that is Not known to push the scion for excellent fruit but just the opposite in quality. Is there something I am missing. I know that PT would be a bad choice for your climate, but there are many rootstocks that are know to push fruit quality that would do good in your climate.

In John's case, its a border he needs and no interest in this varieties's fruit.

But, if profit is the greatest motive, then I'd think that a rootstock with high vigor and production trumps fruit quality in an HLB risk / prone growing region. Volk is a highly vigorous stock in my area and i have (and seen) lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruit, kumquats, and Pummelo on it. (But not mandarins).

Then again, Volk could be popular in my area because the propagators have a high degree of success with it. E.g. ....every volk cutting I've attempted... has succeeded.
