My wife and I recently remodeled our Mid-century Modern home's basement. Previously it was dated, dingy and pretty non-functional. An awkwardly sized living area had enough room for some furniture, but it felt small and closed in, even with lots of natural light. The bedroom featured a walk up exit from the basement, but was small and (again) awkwardly sized for modern furniture. Just off the bedroom hallway was a full kitchen, but it was extremely dated cabinetry with very dated flooring. On top of all of that, there were way too many closets - five to be exact!

Then we had a water leak in an ice maker line upstairs! Time to gut and remodel!

We contracted with a local pro from Lakes Construction. Our contractor did a phenomenal job, rolling with our changes, giving us good ideas, and doing a great job when it came down to the final push. My wife and I did the design work!

General list of improvements:

• Expanded living area
• Added three sided electric fireplace
• Replaced all lighting with recessed LED lights, new linear suspension, sconces
• Phillips Hue strips, bulbs above bar, ambiance lighting around fireplace, bedroom
• Transformed two medium closets into a wet bar (we lucked out on the plumbing, taking advantage of existing drains and supply lines for the wet bar)
• Dark walnut stained cabinetry with inlaid glass, beverage center
• Added a 6' island topped with double thick statuary quartz
• Custom floating shelves featured in the bar and fireplace
• Custom wood bench around the fireplace
• Transformed the in-law kitchen into a bedroom
• Added a generous closet to the new bedroom
• All new doors, hardware, trim
