Living room needs help

This is a 1970's house...back when the living room and dining rooms were combined. This room for my husband and I is actually a waste of space.... It has no function. I need ideas for furniture placement and accessories needed to make this room look finished.

thanks

You can't advertise your stuff on the forums.

A rug and coffee table will pull it all together. Pull your chairs closer to the sofa and get a rug big enough so your chairs, sofa and coffee table all fit on it.

Put your stripe pillows on your sofa, your beige pillows on your chairs. Pick one of the brighter colors in the room and get a vase or other accessories for the coffee table in that color.

If it is a traffic area, you can still pull the chairs away from the wall but you'll have to find a different spot for the chest. People can walk behind the chairs.

Denita, I was thinking about that diagram when I wrote my post. Great minds think alike :)

Definitely needs a rug. I don't understand the placement of the couch. Is it centered on the chairs? I can't tell. What about the pair of chairs on either end of the couch facing each other? Is there a way to give the room purpose? Add a TV? Or, could you make it your dining room and turn your dining room into something else? Do you have a piano that could go in here?

d_gw, when I read your post description, that is the visualization that come to mind! Plus, that was the first thing I thought of when reading the OP. You beat me to it. :)

I would switch the cabinet and the drop leaf table. Then add a rug and a round coffee table/ottoman.

Is there anything you could do so the space isn't wasted? There's no rule that you must use this as a living/dining room if you won't use a space designated as such.

Would you utilize a library? A media room? A home gym? An office?

If you want to continue furnishing it as LR/DR good advice above :)

Consider making 2 smaller"rooms" by arranging the furniture to cut the space in half. Float the drop leaf table in the middle of the room, centered with the wall between the two windows. Back the sofa up to it facing the closet end of the room and add a small coffee table in front of it. Angle the two striped chairs on the other side of the drop leaf, facing the entry door. Put your high boy chest in the niche made by the closet bump out. Angle the print chair out to the left side of of the niche (close to the closet, not blocking the opening to the other room.) Your art work looks dull except for the large piece at the end and the bright lower piece from the room next door. Hang that little piece 5" above the high boy chest and move the big art to that big wall where you have the sofa now. Use colors from those two pieces to accessorize the room

Would look similar to this from the entry except the solid drop leaf would replace the sofa table and bench.

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions. Looks like I have some work to do.

Did a little rearranging based on some of the above suggestions. I don't have a rug and coffee table to include yet.

    Your thoughts please.

The above photo is kinda based on decoenthusiaste suggestion.

This is kinda based on suggestion by er612. The drop leaf table is behind the sofa.

I vote #2, minus the table between the two chairs. You want a nice clear path into the room.

Agree with lindsey. The rug will finish it, along with artwork for the walls. It is a beautiful room.

Oh wow...how fun, a whole room to play with.

I think I like the seating facing each other. What is the point of those chairs facing that doorway, doesn't make sense.

always, I think someone up thread suggested breaking the space into two seating areas. Yes, I agree that it's not the best arrangement but I applaud veronc for being open to all our suggestions. Moving furniture is a pain!

I vote arrangement #2 as well. Adding a rug will help to define the space and will probably give you the punctuation mark you're looking for. It will be a nice, cozy living/visiting area... maybe a great place to read and relax, too.

For your style of furniture I would choose a gorgeous Oriental rug, not something modern. If you float your furniture, what about lighting? How will you plug it in? I actually like your arrangement, except that the sofa and the opposite chairs don't seem lined up. I would put the drop leaf table end-on between the two chairs and put a lamp on it. Move the chest to where the drop-leaf table was, put the pictures you have over the couch over the chest, and move that large painting to over your couch. You need books and magazines in this room to give it some life. The pillows are dull, pick some colors from your new rug (Orientals often have blue, turquoise and green in them) and choose pillows in those colors. Your room will look fabulous. Make sure the rug is large enough so that the furniture fits on it, or at least the front legs. Large rugs make a room look larger and more impressive. This room definitely has potential, it just needs to be pulled together and to be given some life and color.

I like new arrangements... lamp scrolls were pretty there. Also like your 2 tables, but would you need/ use a writing desk instead -- behind sofa?

If not used so terribly much, shag leather? Might be nice texture for your flooring. Ok with sofa and the stripe-y chairs.

Though you have to walk around center arrangement - seems more cozy? - maybe smaller area would benefit from smudged pattern. I like your tree art.

It definitely looks like you need a rug and the second arrangement is the best.
