What should I put on the walls or in the empty space by the door?

Hi Yall! Any advice is welcome! I have added some decor to my entry way, but it still seems bare. Should I add something to the walls by the door? Or any advice is welcome! I will post pictures below.

Perhaps a tall plant, an old trunk or suitcases, a couple of brighter cushions on your seat

Is this an entry you use, or mainly for guests? If the former, I'd want a narrow entry table, maybe under the light switches, with a bowl for keys and maybe a drawer for mittens and so forth. if the latter, then I'd just hang a nice print there and move on.

A pretty rug! A console table next to the door would be a nice place to set things down as you walk in the door. Or you could move the bench over to the wall by the door.

Are the hooks intended to be used? My preference is to only hang hooks if they are to be used, so if these aren't they could come down. It would be a good place for a mirror for last-minute hair and makeup checks. If they are going to be used for coats, take the wreath off so your guests feel comfortable hanging their coats there.

One last thing, and it's a little picky and I hope it doesn't offend you. You have three signs in a 30 sqft area that declare this to be "Home." I think that's a bit of overkill and my recommendation would be choose one to keep and replace the others with art or a mirror. Having said that, if you really love them and they speak to your soul, ignore me!!

A rug, preferably with at least a little color, and a mirror.

+1 on a small console/table if it fits. I like a mirror above and console/table below for convenience -- I'd see which wall the grouping fits better, your "Home sweet home" wall or your light switch wall.

That said, I can't see decorating or "styling" a space just for the sake of it. Do you actually sit on the bench to put shoes on or take them off? Do you use the hooks for hats, bags, jackets etc. or is it just for looks?

This entry way is never used- we have a side entry with a mud room and lockers. I’m sorry if “styling” for the sake of it isn’t something you can’t see, but for me it’s what I see. This really wasn’t about insulting what I currently have, which is what every comment has been but was asking for suggestions. The hooks aren’t used. But I like them. I also clearly like HOME. Sorry it isn’t up to everyone’s standards. Thank you anyway!

I like what you have going on already - simple, inviting, uncluttered. A rug would add another layer of interest. Maybe a mirror to the right of the door.

Regarding your desire to "style" this area - I agree with you. I love looking around my home and seeing pretty areas, even those I don't use. I like looking at them. I imagine you walking down your stairs and enjoying the view of your entry. Best to you.

I am so sorry I offended you. Sincerely. I don't see anything wrong with what you've done and I tried to express my comment in a way that introduced a different perspective kindly. Obviously I missed the mark and again, I'm sorry.

Reading through the other comments, mine is the only one that I would think was remotely critical and I truly didn't mean it that way. The part of your original post that said "Or any advice is welcome!" made me believe it wasn't out of line to make a further suggestion.

At the risk of "protesting too much" I just want to reiterate that I think we all have the right to have whatever we want in our homes and our homes should bring us joy, and I would never tell anyone what they chose was wrong. If you love it, it's RIGHT.

Wow! Thank you for the rug image! I am ordering one as we speak! Really brings out the space!!! And thank you for the understanding! I saw quite a few Pinterest boards using the “hooks” with a wreath and loved the look! I’d rather style areas just for the sake so the house doesn’t look empty and looks pretty!

Agreed Sandy! I love styling areas that I know my husband and son won’t touch so they stay nice! I think a small table there is going to be perfect! I do have one on the other side by my steps further into the entry with a mirror so I may do the latter suggestion you mentioned!

Hey Lindsey - thanks for commenting back. It wasn’t just directed towards you - but after two comments suggesting my hooks and bench were pointless and saying styling just to style is also pointless it got a bit fustrating. I was asking for advice of what to put in the space to make it finished - not to pick apart what I already have. Maybe I wasn’t clear on that.

I can understand that frustration. And again, I'm sorry for my part.

Would it help to hear the we were all typing at the same time, so none of us could see the others' comments until after we hit Submit? It wasn't so much piling on, as just all being on the same wavelength.

I didn't mean to insult you, it's just that it's easier to make suggestions understanding how the space is used. Knowing that you don't use the space at all, I wouldn't at all recommend a console or table -- there's just no point. And I asked about using the bench because I was going to suggest a galvanized boot/shoe tray, etc. But again, I wouldn't suggest that because there's no point spending the money or cluttering up the space if it's not necessary. I also think decorating or styling is more realistic for the space if it's not overdone.

On the wall by the light switch, knowing more about the space, I'd suggest a mirror as well as a hall tree for coats, which could come in handy for overflow outerwear when you entertain, rather than tossing coats on a bed, etc. But a hall tree would probably mean moving the "home" sign. Otherwise, I think a mirror by the light switch and a smaller rug would help considerably.
