For someone in zone 6, yeah you’re wasting your time growing something you can get in the store.

Good advise, i just quit try something else, don't know what. Pip you got any advise?

What do you like that you can’t get?

I think they are so pretty that I grow indoors. And get some fruitlets that smell of heaven but fall off- it still gives me pleasure. I ate some Satsumas and Moro's lately and they were sooooo yummy and an amazing treatI (I live in a tiny rural beach town and no farmers markets or Trader Joes for 90 min away- got the delicious fruit at my kids in San Francisco). Don't know if I'll ever have any of my own but the hope, and the blossoms keep me going.

Petfish, i trade places with you anytime. I had an opportunity to buy property, 5 acres at Widby island, i don't think i spelled that right, with my brother in law. He chicken-out.

It's pretty spectacular here Bob. Been here for 20 years and love it. It too is like living on an island, and despite not being able to grow anything but spruce and pine, it's awfully nice. Looks a lot like Whidbey Island :-)

Just got out from work.. spraying trees down out side and feeding them.

I only grow what I can't afford or isn't available. Figs, kumquats, sweet lemon, Pears that taste like apples but without the disease and insect problems, and don't forget etc.

Pet, my wife buys some smelly stuff at her Bath and Bodyworks store and she is more happy than citrus flowers. I got so many strikes against me, no foolin....!

It looks like i don't belong to any forum, tried many, some are too worldly, too many strwberries, brambles, tomato's, too crazy about figs. I just finish correspondence with Menlogrowers and of the two tree,s, one they don,t have and the other they do but it is growing in a 45 gl container with a width of 35 inches. They will ship by motor freight.

Bob, maybe you should think about giving up on indoors and save for a greenhouse?

It’ll make your life easier most of the year.

One of my biggest mistakes is buying too many trees and too much equipment. Now I have nothing. Partly because of the moves I’ve made the last few years but mainly because indoor growing is really hard, expensive and time consuming.

2-3 trees and a greenhouse for me would have been a better decision.

Pip I am with you on that I have a spot for every tree of mine to go outside with no extras.

But they taste so good! The sanguinelli blood oranges I got were spectacular. You can’t buy that variety in the store. I can send you budwood anytime ;)

Laura, how do the sanguinelli oranges compare in flavor to other blood oranges, e.g, moro or tarroco oranges?

Thanks Vladimir, I was about to ask the same question. Last year’s Moros were fantastic (from store). This year’s crop has left me disappointed so far.

I grow them because they are beautiful and functional. i love the smell of the flowers and the leaves. Because i know exactly how they are grown and what they are sprayed with. Because i enjoy growing things in general and because I can :).

It's definitely more expensive if you factor in the time, but i get such joy in seeing the dark coloured new growth, the first flowers, fruitlets.

Pip, a greenhouse heh? No thank you, don,t like to replace roof panels, but worse, you cannot sell your house that easy. If you live on your property forever maybe yes. There are two properties nearby that have greenhouses and they are still on the market. I don,t have that many tree,s but they are producing pretty good. Now if I want more I can make combo tree,s easily. I have an easy source already, no other than Laura, hope she don,t read this. I like a workshop way better, converted in a “greenhouse with just skylights and tall windows, you know like a two and a halve garage.

Salty, I am with you. My tree,s should be ornamental have beautiful flowers and fruits at the end. Citrus is one of those, my persimmon also and my figs all nice nurtured tree,s.

The trees I grow are for fruit production to add substantially to our annual food supply. The choice of varieties is for rare nutrition and fruits that can't be bought at the super market. Plants that don't produce and are in the way get eliminated (grape, hazelnut, dragon fruit, papaya, Apples and sweet cherries are real losers) Kiwis and blueberries are still on trial. Figs, Pears and peaches are real winners.. Citrus appears to be a future winner but needs more settling in. . My garden is for food production. vegetable do very well but i never know which one will do well and which one are dudes. It changes from year to year.

I’m in the process of turning my garage’s southern wall into a polycarbonate one. Call it a garage with windows, call it a greenhouse. It still functions the same. In fact in our zone it will retain heat easier than a plastic structure. Especially when I insulate the north side.

My garage is my “greenhouse”. Faces directly south, sun all day in Winter. Zone7 NJ.

Great grow garage, but how do you get the light in and keep it warm?

Blueberries are totally worth it, if you are able to provide them with what they need.

The way things are going with hlb, I feel like citrus prices are just gonna shoot up and diversity and quality are going to drop. One day they might be extremely rare.

Bob...I read that ;). Vladimir and Kelly...I think they tasted even better. They do not color up as much as moros, not to mention my sunroom conditions are not perfect for coloring them up. Mine did color up some as you saw from my pics. The flavor was excellent...sweet and light...hard to explain. I like them even better than moros, but I could be biased since I grew them. My tree grew five oranges and they are all gone now, but it is blooming, and with age, should be even more productive.

I think if it makes you happy growing them then that's worth way more than the price comparison. If you are growing solely for saving money or food then it makes sense to concentrate more on the praticalities and what you get in return.

Either way at least you've tried :).

If this is their first year to fruit, I can only imagine they will get better as they get stronger and you gather more tips. :) plus no matter how cheap stuff gets I'm always pretty sure home produce is /tastes better (I might be biased though ) :).

Plus if citrus growing was really easy we wouldn't have as much to talk about :D.
