I am going to begin propagating roses from my collection to share out of patent varieties with local rose lovers, and to duplicate these varieties in my yard, if all goes well.

Since learning we are staying put, I have been researching this topic like crazy and have gathered a lot of information from this forum. The one thing I would suggest is to take to heart the medium used for propagating and the methods used by those who garden in an area similar to yours. It seems that humidity levels can be key, and a factor that separates what a person in my arid desert might do versus someone in Seattle or the South, etc. I also think that humidity can impact what is used, although it seems that perlite and vermiculite are commonly used by people wanting to propagate roses from cuttings in a variety of growing areas.

I agree Desertgarden..I tried everything under the sun and my cutting kept rotting. I had a bag of pine bark fines and I mixed it 50/50 with a bag of potting soil. I stuck my cuttings in, watered, and left the pots along my chain link fence in dappled light. Now I have almost a 100% rooting rate! I was making it so hard....now, I also live in the south with extremely high humidity which I think is crucial.

I got four bags of those pine bark fines on sale at Wal-Mart for $1a bag if I could have fit more bags I would have grabbed more. I'm trying that this year. For some reason I thought you used just the fines, so it's 50/50 with potting soil?

I did some in just fines and some in 50/50. I can't believe you found the bags for $1.00!! I usually pay $3.00! UGH! You scored! The 50/50 mix I used later in the season when it was so hot and dry. The fines were great! Just be sure to firm up around each cutting after you water the first few times.

I'm going to see if they still have some when I go back to florence. I hope they do..
