To mount or not to mount?

This living room will be getting a makeover with white painted shelves, new walls and carpet. We would like to add a tv. Should the tv be mounted on the brick, sit on the mantle or be placed in a nook next to the fireplace? Any other ideas for updating this room?

I would take out one of the shelves and put the TV next to the fireplace at a good height for watching it while seated (i.e. lower than it would be over the mantel). May I also suggest replacing the ceiling fan/light combo with something less obtrusive? Your shelves are going to beautiful painted, and will look great against the natural brick.

Agree with feeny. TV over fireplace is often too high for comfortable viewing. You have a great opportunity to put it next to the fireplace. If you're getting new curtains too, could you put them much closer to the ceiling? That will look much better.
Lovely room. Would love to see the 'after' pics once you're done.
