Rooted cuttings do not really have a "root crown"; where the roots begin depends on how deep the cutting was planted.

Are there general recommendations on planting depth for cuttings then? I've used a paper towel roll to keep the soil 'away' from the trunk where there were no roots, about the depth of the 'bag' it was planted in originally. Good enough?

(I'm used to "regular" vegetative growth plants, not woody ones. Many of the rules are different now!)

If you plant a cutting 6 inches deep, you will get 5-6 inches of roots. I sometimes recommend to my growers of my grafted Meyers that they plant them a few inches deeper; it encourages more root growth.
