Where to find root crown on meyer lemon (cuttings)

I'm trying to find the root crown on my meyer lemon which has been propagated through cuttings. I've dug around the trunk down about an inch or so and found a fabric 'root bag' of some sort, but no obvious crown like I saw here. It's very young I think, maybe 1 year? It was a gift so I don't know for certain how old it was.

The "bag" can be seen at the back of the trunk in this picture.

It's going to spend its entire life in a container, right now it's in an airpot. Do I need to worry about this for containers, or is this only an in-ground issue?
