Martha, see the other post of same name above - you can have really strong arts & crafts elements but without being a full blown "craftsman" or bungalow." Look up prairie style - which is kind of a "missing link" between arts and crafts and the later ranch style of the 40s/50s/60s. But then the windows kinda give it a cottagey flair too!

BTW, I would not discount pine as a "lesser" wood. In 1920 they would have still been using old growth pine/fir - taken from the original forests which once blanketed much of eastern portion of this continent. That stuff is hard as nails and nothing like the horrible splintery farmed wood of today. It may have been considered "lesser" back in the day, but now there is appreciation for it - if youve ever priced vintage wood in salvage store.

If its been painted , then the ship has sailed and you would have splecial dispensation from the old house gods to paint again (heheh). If the first layer is shellac, it may be possible to strip it but may or may not be worth the effort. Sometimes they used lesser quality paint grade pine upstairs, and the more beautiful expensive cuts of wood downstairs to be shellacked and stained.
