We have a beautiful NYC backyard filled with plantings that have been attracting all kinds of wonderful wildlife, including unusual birds, bees, and butterflies. The neighboring house behind us is owned by a corporation, and the tenants who change every few months leave open bags of garbage in their backyard, which attracts rats. The rats have now begun to invade our yard and especially our raised beds to breed their babies. We've emptied our raised beds completely, but need a method to keep the rats out of our yard so that we may continue to feed the other wildlife and ourselves. (Their rats also eat holes through the wooden walls of their garage into our yard, which we plug up with wire mesh and stones.) We've called NYC Sanitation on numerous occasions, and sometimes when the garbage is near their front fence, they'll receive a violation, but this has not curbed the issue, and we don't expect it to change. Any solutions on rat proofing our property? We don't want to use rat poison, which can kill other creatures, including our neighbor's dog. Thanks.
