Is this Ruby Star? I think not?

I got this bulb from ETGB and it was labelled Ruby star - but doesn't look anything like the pics of Ruby Star I saw online. What do you think it is?

Also, I accidentally knocked down the pot with my tinkerbell yesterday. Apart from being sad that I knocked out the blooms, It exposed the roots and I see that no new roots have grown on the bulb. It still had the dry roots from when it came from the store. Should I be worried? Should the bulb not have put out some roots by now?

Hi Joy, no unfortunately this is not Ruby Star. It could be Minerva or something like that, but this is just a guess.

Don't worry too much about the roots on your Tinkerbell. Some bulbs only start growing after flowering and will grow roots and leaves then. But you should remove the dry roots. They are dead and will rot eventually.

Looks very much like Minerva to me!

If the roots on your Tinkerbell are all dry, I'd concur with Anja to tear them off, if there's fleshy parts left on the roots, I would leave those. Place the cleaned bulb in the soil if it's not too wet. It should just be a tiny bit moist. If you fear the bulb could top over, secure it with sticks or such. It will form new roots in time.

Oooh, so sorry!! I'm afraid, Minerva is it!! Minerva herself is not so bad, but not when you're expecting the sumptious Ruby Star!!

If you follow all of the above advice your Tinkerbell should be just fine.

No, it's not Ruby Star

This is my hippeastrum sold as "Ruby Star", but is more similar to "Opal Star" (same shape, but different color)

Thanks everyone. This one was really disappointing because I really did not want Minerva. That is two bulbs from ETGB that were not true to label.....

I got this bulb from RoyalColor and it was labelled "Lemon Line" - but think it is "Akiko – Jumbo"

This season in total, I ordered 4 bulbs from ETGB and Bogota was Ferrari, Exotica was papilio but Glee and La Paz were true. I didn't complain because what I did end up with was a few dollars in my favor as well as the fact that loved my mislabels!! I know I probably should have let them know but ETGB has been one of my favorite sites to buy from over the years and I don't want to contribute to their demise. If I had received a rotten bulb or something really generic then I probably would have let them know. I do agree that this year has been really bad for them and mislabels.

I did finally get my Bogota from WFF but of course they have exorbitant prices as well as shipping but so far my bulbs have been true. I'm still waiting for Maybelle to bloom, she appears to be stuck!

I also got a Double Delight instead of Double Circus from RC and they weren't even selling Double Delight this year so I chalk that up to the distributor and I didn't say anything. I think that we may be on thin ice as far as RC continuing to sell and send to us in the states, just my opinion of course

But, I did receive a damaged Jungle Star from RC and that one I did send pictures of to them and they agreed to a credit next season. But, this bulb wanted to live so after some carving, basal plate cutting and general TLC she is growing leaves and roots. Next year, I won't remind them about the credit, just trying to be fair.

Yes I am not planning on asking for exchanges or credits because technically they are all new to me - so it’s not likely that I would have had the mislabeled one! For some reason Minerva instead of ruby star was a big disappointment though - probably because it took so long to grown and other than purple rain (which is pretending to be a rock right now) this was the second most anticipated opening for me !

As for your mislabeled Ruby Star I think that is one I would let them know about. I personally consider Minerva a generic although she is beautiful and for years I had a couple but, Ruby Star is in the "prime" category so perhaps they would give you a credit for one bulb next season. Just my opinion and nothing personal against Minerva but.....
