What a beautiful room! I think if you float one of the chairs across from each other it will balance the space and create a nice conversation area.

Nothing more to say after decoenthusiaste! The trick is to center the seating around the fireplace to balance the room.

With the rug and the ottoman centered, you can also try flanking the fireplace with the wing chairs (leaving the round table on the left of the fireplace. Add a console or cabinet under the double window.

All of the mirrors over the sofa could be rearranged. Put the four same mirrors over the fireplace and relocate the painting over the sofa with the two smaller round mirrors on either side (add sconces in front of the round mirrors).

Ditto but I would consider the white grid to be placed over the sofa and the square mirrors run vertically where the white grid was and ditch the curvy mirrors.

Thank you for the great ideas! I unfortunately cannot move the chairs to flank the fireplace as the room is narrow and they would block any path to enter from the front door. If the rug is moved to be centered on the fireplace, it sticks out far into the doorway to the dining room. I will try moving one of the chairs to the other side of the sofa and see how that looks. Agree about the white piece behind door to sunroom, think something "heavier" needs to be there.

I don't see a problem with the rug and sofa being partially in front of the doorway to the dining room. It is often more interesting to weave through a room to get to another one than to have straight walkways and no balance. If you don't put furniture in the sunroom end, it will continue to be bare, and your focal fireplace will be out of alignment with your seating. I think that is the more important issue for your room. Moving one chair won't create the change you said you're looking for. Please try my suggestions - its just moving things around - and try to live with it for a week before dismissing it as unworkable.

You could also try aligning the side edge of the rug with the edge of the fireplace. Your chairs will probably be entirely on the rug which isn't a problem.

If you take out the white shelf you could move the white table over by the door and put a chair by the window. It looks like a beautiful spot to relax and it is close enough to join conversation, too.

The white shelf could probably go to the left of the sunroom door, although anything you put there other than a flat piece will require the door to be removed.

Hi- What a lovely room, love the color palette!

Can you remove either the white shelf unit or the spool-leg table? You don't need both in the same area. I do love the spool leg table, if it will fit, you might want to keep that. (I bet that spool table has wonderful wood underneath if you are up to the challenge of stripping re-finishing and staining, the room could use some dark wood to ground it.) The two identical side tables seem too bedroom-ish and maybe matchy-matchy. If the hassock is close enough, it serves as the cocktail table, so you can get rid of one of the side tables, moving the sofa in whichever direction you feel makes the room feel less tight, probably closer to the dining area. That will allow you to move the sofa and carpet a bit more towards the dining room end of the room making them seem more centered.

Although rugs usually start just behind the front legs of the furniture, in this case, it is too close to the fireplace and is a fire hazard, and is half in and half out of the walking path of the person exiting the chair closer to the fireplace. So you do need to move the rug. The small stool-table between the two white chairs cannot have that plant, as is, it cannot hold a drink, which is what its purpose is. Another suggestion would be a sizable wood tray on the hassock to corral your magazines and any drinks.

The collection of smaller mirrors on the wall over the sofa makes the room feel constricted. How about one large mirror with an exotic feel? Designers Phoebe Howard and Mark Sikes both have done this in blue and white rooms. Some looks that would work well would be Indian, Indian Mughal, Moroccan with inlaid bone or carved wood or even Venetian glass if you want something a bit fancy. A large work of art would work well, too. If it is really big, center it over the sofa. If not, put it just to the left and put something three- dimensional to the right of it, such as something on a pedestal, or very interesting plates, something architectural. You could also put the mirror over the fireplace and put your painting over your sofa and add a picture light over the painting if you are concerned it won't be well seen, and they now come battery powered and cordless. About the mantel, can you add one more different height? How about a shorter object of texture with interesting texture and contour such as a large seashell or coral or pinecone, or maybe some tall branches or leaves in one of the vases?

You have three identical lamps. Does the room have overhead lighting? If not, what about sconces? If you want task lighting for reading, what about wall mounted lights?

Can you post an update pic of the change you made so we can see it and add more input on the space near the sunroom? Very excited to see your changes.

I adore your room. So pretty. Others have given you great advice about balancing the space. The only thing that catches my eye that I might change is to lower your mirrors and probably eliminate a few. Where did you get your beautiful rug?

I have attached a photo of what is in front of the window at the other end of the room. The chair is important to me and must stay in the room, other items can be adjusted! Agree that an interesting object needs to be added to the mantle, I will look around the house and see what I can find.

I moved the rug to about 6 inches from the edge of the fireplace. If moved further the chairs would have to be sitting only on hardwood or would block the entryway from the front door.

I will look for a tray for the ottoman and still need to move the mirrors....will update photos then. Ideas for left of the sunroom door?

Hi tilly- The Ballard Etagere is lovely, but it is really a place to put knick-knacks just like the ladder you already have is. On the walls on either side of the door to the sun room you could put framed prints, paintings, or something textural like textile art.

You can can take large pieces of butcher paper cut to different sizes and tape them to those walls on either size of the sunroom with painter's tape so you don't mar the painted surface to help you decide what proportions and position work best.

Do you have something you inherited such as a needlepoint or embroidered sampler or cushion cover? It can be carefully cleaned, framed and displayed. (They can be found in resale shops, too.)

happylegs's idea of a plant in the corner opposite the window is a good one. Ficus is temperamental and will shed its leaves the first few months. An indoor palm (i.e. kentia) is nice and easy to take care of and would work well in your room if that window's light is not too strong.

Do you like to curl up with a book? What about turning that right side of the door to the sun room into your reading nook? You can remove the ladder, leave that lovely chair, and either leave the spool table or find a smaller table, perhaps the drum table from your living room. You can add a pouf or footstool for your feet, depending on high you like your legs. The pouf can be a textile in the blue family or there are interesting blue and white leather ones, too. You can find vintage footstools that you can have recovered in fabric or leather pieces. This is also something that you can leave their original wood and not paint white.

Before you buy anything, pile up pillows or phone books to decide what height you legs feel best at. In my salad days, I liked a high ottoman height at the same level as the top of the seat cushion. Now as an ahem, experienced person, I prefer my legs on a footstool 10" below the top of the seat cushion.

If you need a light source to read there in the evening, keep your eyes peeled for a floor lamp (to replace the table lamp on the spool table) as you scour re-sale shops.

If you have made the decision to leave the chair there, that will help you decide what you want to hang above it and on the opposite wall.

I am big on cutting out pieces of paper and taping them to the wall for proportions, and to the floor too, for traffic patterns to see if there will be enough walking space.

Methinks your room is not too bad at all. Yes, float one of those chairs to the other side so you have a gathering.

A little rug for ladder, chair, table area would define that as a separate seating area. Maybe an odd shape rug like animal rug.

This is an updated photo with all of the furniture pulled closer to the sunroom. It really has made a difference. I still need a tall plant or some help with that left corner, to move the mirrors and guidance for layering the mantle which is only 6.5" deep. Ideas for bringing a little more lime green into the room?!

I agree about moving the mirrors or eliminating a few but also remove the braces off of the mantal, they are a distraction from the painting. They also look too matchy matchy and contrived.

I would remove the vases from the mantel. Room looks very nice.! I would center the rug from the fireplace and have the sofa and coffee table centered too.

Painting over loveseat and mirrors of some type over FP

I think that your living room looks great with the tweaks that you've made. The only thing I might add is a comfy chair next to the left of the fireplace- maybe with a fabric that pulls all the colors of the room together. By adding a larger chair to that side of the room, you will see and feel it's more balanced. And then move the smaller chair and small table to the left of the sunroom door. I like the mirrors above your couch and the painting above your fireplace.

I wonder if you could find a vintage torchere or floor lamp somewhere., why not go to the second hand and antique stores and give them index cards with your name and phone numner and email and write on it what you are looking for and ask them to contact you if it comes in. The lamp is pretty. You can try it and see if it is the right height, and also see if it looks either cooordinating or redundant with the spool legs of the white spool leg table. Some times you can't tell until you actually get it in the room.

You could get a little bit of gold and some texture by putting some peacock feathers in a vase. They are inexpensive too.

You can add some throw pillows that have the blue of the ottoman with some gold. That would be just stunning.

But I wouldn't necessarily do all of the above.

First of all, I love the furniture and all the white in the room. For the sake of variety, would you consider switching the location of the sofa with that of the matching chairs? Having a heavy item like the sofa at the end of the room will make the rest of the room look more square. You could put one white end table between the matching chairs and re-arrange the mirrors you have on the solid wall and display one of the long mirrors above the extra end table near a corner of the room. Perhaps you could move some of the smaller tables and the extra wooden chair to the sunroom or to a bedroom or dining room.

Nice and pleasant room! I love your white ikat pillows. Could you tell me please where they came from? I do not like your above the sofa decor. I would replace it with FR wall art or with your white plaque (behind the open door).
