Just go with a satin sealer after staining it, I would not stain it and leave it alone the wood will get destroyed and stained if someone spills something on it.

You can use a satin floor fish and it you want it even more duller you can go over it lightly with some de-glossing sand paper...but to leave it un-protected is asking for trouble, even if no one spills anything just the common house hold dirt will start darkening the wood and eventually you'll have a darker path where you walk through the room

I agree with Dominick. Your floors will last longer with a finish. Some floors only have a waxed finish and it's a choice if you want the more natural look. However, with wax you will have maintenance. I always spec "Traffic" which is a commercial flat finish that lasts for many years. It might be made by Duraseal.

Waterlox Tung Oil finish is also a very good product and allows for spot refinishing in heavy traffic areas without total resanding and staining.

Traffic is from Bona and is available in flat, semi or gloss finish. Bona has several high quality wood floor finishes available including a non slip finish. Another comparable is Streetshoe from Basic Coatings. Both products are expensive, but worth the money to me.
