Ok, I was re-reading on of the threads about rinsing/storing perlite and I want to pass along something helpful.

For those who use kitty litter that comes in those wonderful, heavy duty containers with the top opening lid and that great sturdy handle,,,,,,,,,

NEVER GET RID OF THEM!!!!!

These are great containers to store soil, perlite, vermiculite, specific soil mixes etc. In one container I have the bagged perlite and vermiculite (in their original bags).

Another is filled with my 1/2 perlite, 1/2 MG mix. Oh yes and with a handy dandy scooper in it also. No need to keep it in the original MG bag, I measure, pour, mix it directly into the container in small amounts until I fill the container or run out of perlite whichever comes first!

Only one problem.......I don't have a cat. I am terrified of cats. BUT, I am not above getting them from my favorite "Curbside Store" (yes I clean them out well if there is something in them, but all the ones I have got had nothing in them! Lucky so far, but I still wash them.). Or if people bring them to the recycle bins and I happen to find it (we recycle once a week). OR if I find someone who will save them for me.

I can use as many as I find. I do have other hobbies that they come in handy for. (Storing ceramic slip for instance!)

Now, one thing. When you first put your soil mix, or plain soil in the container, I wouldn't clise the lid too tightly for a while. And I will stir it every so often digging deeper and deeper each time. MG/soil is pretty damp when you first open the bag. So It does need to dry out just a little,,,just my opinion.

I haven't really found a container on the market as sturdy as these are. The worst thing that can happen is the crease in the lid can finally crack in the seam after a few years of back and forth/open and close. But that isn't a problem! Just lift it on and press it down!
