Help with colors and layout

We are finally updating our front room. We don't use it much so it's been on the bottom of our list. All furniture will be replaced (obviously worn out). Carpet is staying. We like the idea of adding some gray to the walls as long as it coordinates with the carpet. It's a smaller front room, 11×14, so we are thinking a loveseat and chair or possibly 2 chairs and ottomans. I am the only one who uses the room regularly to read. We like farmhouse and traditional. It's the first room you see when you walk in our house. Any suggestions welcome.

A piano is special in a home - would that be an exterior wall, where mirror is? Would it seem nice to move it there?

While on it - what about wall next to it? Someone could sit there to turn pages. :)

Are other sources for chalk paint - would rocking chair be nice in what accent color you decide on?

So, a room that doesn't get used much... do you think it *will* get used if it's updated, or is it mostly for looks? Do you *want* it to be a sitting room, with lots of seating, as it is now?

Well then, do you like reading with your feet up?! You mention ottoman.... as to new look: do you have a good lamp you'd use, etc....?

We would like it mainly for looks and for me to use as a comfy reading spot no a lot of seating is not necessary.

I'd start with function - comfy reading spot - so, one excellently comfortable reading chair (or loveseat or sofa) and one great reading lamp. Maybe a nice table for your book, and maybe a small bookshelf. Since it looks like there's nice light, some plants? And art for the walls. I would not buy furniture that will likely not get butts in it.

    Thank you! Any color suggestions?

Since paint is pretty cheap and easy to change, I'd probably start with the bigger investments, first. Find a reading chair you love, first, and go from there.

I agree with Carrie. Either 1 really comfortable chair and ottoman or a smaller sofa to stretch out on and read. I use my living room during the day for reading and hanging out on Houzz. Art would definitely warm up the space. A bookshelf is a great idea and plants will definitely warm things up. What is your budget for furniture, accessories, etc.?

We were thinking $1000 to $2000 on furniture... Didn't want to spend too much on a room we don't use much. I like the idea of a comfy chair and ottoman in the corner by the window and maybe a small loveseat. Need to figure out what to put where the piano is and color scheme. I like the mirror on the wall.

I don't think you necessarily need to put anything where the piano is, at least, not right away. Get the stuff you know you want: a place to sit for reading, and whatever else you need to read in comfort.

Art on that wall may be enough. You may decide to move that mirror to where the piano is. Your budget isn't huge, and it sounds like you're not under particular time pressure to get the room done, so what you put on that wall doesn't need to get decided immediately. You may be happier with the decision if it evolves.

Sometimes we have a small collection in our home - to be pulled out of rooms, gleaned, and placed in a room like this.... could be almost anything [that you'd enjoy].

Do you live in a city with a good Craigslist or Offerup? I've been amazed what we can find on there in furnishing my son's new apartment. I've purchased a few things from Craigslist myself, including a $2100 leather sofa that was literally never sat in for $800!

I love your couch...looks so comfy and "slouchy" and the color is great. I'd keep it. I'd also do what others have suggested and put your money into the "perfect for you", reading chair, ottoman, side table and lighting and then "shop the house" for other pieces. One thing that would make a big difference is to replace the dated valances on the windows with ceiling to floor panels. I would also add a large plant and bold, colorful art that speaks to you, maybe with a reading/books theme? Art.com and Etsy are good places to look for art and you can sort by subject. Good luck!
